anamorphic vs wide angle

I am new to cameras at this level, buy wish to video in 16/9

I was persuaded to buy a super wide Panoramic high res 0.5x lense instead of the anamorphic adaptor. I was told this would give superior results in wide screen shooting.

Was I informed correctly, and will this lense be better than ther anamorphic adaptor?

The wide-angle lens will not give you the ability to shoot in 16:9. It will give you a wider field of view, but it will not give you 16:9. The anamorphic adapter transforms your 4:3 video to become 16:9. They are different tools for different purposes.
