Anamorphic Okay for Rookie?

Dear Forum Members,
As I've mentioned in an adjacent post, I'll be shooting a short later this month on a 100A and editing via FCP5. I'd like a 16x9 finish.
I am able to rent an anamorphic lens, but, considering some of it's challenges I've read about both on this site and in Mr. Green's book, should I go for it? Or is Squeeze a safer route? I've never used the anamorphic nor squeeze mode before. No doubt, I will run tests, but testing will be limited with the anamorphic due to the high rental cost (I'm still in the "NO" budget filmmaking category).
Thanks,
CB

go with squeeze... until you can afford to really train yourself with the anamorphic lens, it won't help you. Even when you are very familiar with it, it isn't the best idea all of the time. Don't experiment with equipment when shooting your project.

Thanks...

Thanks...

Thanks for the insight and reality check.... Any more thoughts out there?
BTW, I went to UCSC!

personally i'd go for 4:3 full frame (putting framing references on the LCD), then crop and make it 16:9 in post.
Quality-wise, you'd get about the same results of 'squeeze', but you would enjoy:
- easier focusing and framing cause the aspect ratio is unaltered
- the option of adjusting the framing up or down in post before cropping

You Sure???

You Sure???

I have to say, after reading a ton of threads regarding 16x9, the predominant opinion seems to be shooting anamorphic or squeeze, since they are native 16x9....

nice, I'm graduating in June.

The extra resolution that the anamorphic adapter is nice. But most of the time, people can't tell the difference. When I first got the lens, I went out and shot my first couple scenes with it for a project. Long story short, only one or two shots came out perfectly in terms of working with the lens.

one thing to note is that if you set your DVX's LCD to display 16:9 (to view squeeze unstretched), it becomes an overscan image rather than the underscan view you get in 4:3. With this, you just need to be careful about boom mics creeping in and such.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.
I actually didn't know the LCD can be set to view 16:9 unstreched. Is that true on the 100A? I'll look into that.
Also, with FCP5, the system automatically recognizes the sqeeze mode and adjusts in the viewer/canvas, right?

no, when you import change the capture settings to anamorphic (there should be a preset for it).
