Anamorphic Lens of choice?

I've got the AGDVX100A... I usually shoot in 16x9 Squeeze Mode.

I'm looking to buy an Anamorphic Lens, because I hear the quality is much better if you intend to project the final product on the big screen. I'm told that just shooting in squeeze mode will still make things look "soft."

I honestly haven't done too much research, but I'm told this forum usually has any answer regarding the 100A.

Any thoughts on the matter or suggestions for a lens purchase would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Anamorphic Lens of choice?

It's true that the anamorphic lens has a better image quality because if I'm right, there is 25% more pixels in your image. It's good to shoot with the anamorphic when you want to blow out your project on film! The downside is that it's long to set up! The focus is harder to get so it's not for point-and-shot.

Re: Anamorphic Lens of choice?

If you do not think you will be doing a film out it has little to no purpose. Even with a film out I would argue that it is limiting. Like Nancy Schriber said the wides are where you can tell the res loss on a blow up. So in my opinion you should use the ana for wide shots and the stock lens to play with your DOF. But again this is all just opinion.

I would say though if 2 features that have been to sundance have all be shot with the stock lens your not going to be hurting too bad without one.

I think this is excellent advice.

Actually there has been more than two. This year alone there was Murderball, Rock School, and Lonesome Jim. Also two shorts that we know of, Oh My God, and Cry for Help. And those are the ones we know of. There may be others.

The things that count the most is the talent behind the camera, talent in front of the camera and a strong story. Oh and of course, the DVX. ;-)

Best,

Jan

Jan,

Would these be included with the DVX in your next promotion? ;)

Re: Anamorphic Lens of choice?

I have a short that should be screening in NIFF this year, but I was refereing to larger projects, I know there are a few features outside of lonesome jim and november that have been shot with the DVX but I was mainly making reference to ones with some buzz about them. I am personally confident in the DVX to give you a film like image though or else I would not be doing all of our work with it. Its an amazing piece of equipment, and I can not wait to see how it preforms with redrocks micro35 for the next music video we are doing.
