Anamorphic lens focus issue

I tried to adjust my anamorphic lens on my DVX-100A so that it has sharp focus. I rotated it and the focus hasn't improved. I reset the anamorphic lens a few times and nothing seems to work. I also put the attachment on while the camera was facing upwards. I noticed that there is space between the camera's lens and the anamorphic attachment. There is more space on one side and it's tight on the other. Any suggestions. Thanks.

Focusing with the anamorphic is not easy or intuitive. It took me about 30 pages in The DVX Book to explain the anamorphic adapter in detail. You can search here for old threads that talk about it too.

Barry, are there any alternatives to the Panasonic anamorphic adapter and can you still use the adapter with a matte box or wide angle?

Thanks,
FD

There are no alternatives, other than using "squeeze mode". The Panasonic can be made to work, but it takes work and care.

You can use certain matteboxes with it (like the CineTactics Matteblox Anamorphic version, or the Chrosziel 411-53PK if you modify the anamorphic adapter by shaving off its lens shade). No wide angle will work with it but you don't need one; the anamorphic itself is effectively a .67 wide-angle adapter.

Thanks Barry. I have a Cinetastics Matteblox (non-anamorphic) and hate the way you have to frorce the 4x4 filters inside the matte box (attaching to the velcro), is there some special way to make the thing fit in there any better? I got burned in India when zoomed out wide and not checking the eye piece going handheld with "filter holder" edges in the frame. Any thoughts?
(sorry for the hijack)

I have researched the "gap" between the attachment and the DVX. It appears to be common. I looked at several other DVX + anamorphic adapter set-ups both in rental stock, store inventory and other owners. I does not appear to affect the focus in my model. I notice that the variance is more top to bottom than it is side to side. Maybe this is why the focus isn't so much of an issue. When it works, it's beautiful. But it sure is a pain in the butt!

Thanks everyone. I'll continue to play with the attachment in order to find the fine focus. In the mean time I'll order Barry Greene's book.

Best thing you could do is order the book. Just try lossing the lens up a little turn back and forth then tighten a little and then move it, should get it fairly square.

Once you get the charts in Barrys book you will be focusing sharp in no time.

Telephoto with Anamorphic Adaptor

Telephoto with Anamorphic Adaptor

Just wanted to ask about the possibility of adding a telephoto, to the anamorphic adaptor, to the matteblox for 4x4 filters. That would be awesome, but is it possible? I want the longer lens of a telephoto to help with narrow DOF. Any suggestions?

I used the modified Panasonic anamorphic adapter (shaved lens hood) with the Chrosziel 411-53PK. Focus truly is a challenge, and I have never been able to go wider than Z16 on the DVX zoom or else vignetting reveals the edges of the matte box.
