I'm planning on buying anamorphic lens for my gh1 pairing it with my nikon 28mm 2.8 and was wondering if any of the $50-100 ones on ebay would work well?
Or to rephrase, what is the cheapest anamorphic lens i can get?
Thanks.

Let me break this to you as gently as I can...

USABLE anamorphic prices are currently in La La Land on Ebay. For an anamorphic that will/might work with a 28mm count on spending between $600 and $900 (eg LA7200). The el cheapo Sankors etc are not really el cheapo anymore...and will only work with longer primes (and at a 2X ratio...1.33 or 1.5 is usually the more desirable).

More and more people feel they need to get into anamorphic...and the Ebay bidding is getting brutal. Must be all of the shakey Vimeo movies of people shining lights into anamorphic lenses...mesmerising...

alright how about for a 50mm 1.8 then?
and my budget has increased to around $500
the prices keep going up correct?
then they would be good investments?

You're looking to buy a 50mm? Or an anamorphic adapter for a 50mm? The same adapter should fit on whatever focal length lenses you have with step-up/step-down rings. Most commonly you'll be using a 52mm to 72mm step-up ring, I believe.

i meant i already have a canon 50mm fd, which adapter would be the cheapest?
would a 2x adapter squeeze the image too much?

The same one that would be the cheapest for your 28mm. If you're looking for 2:35, then probably the LA7200. It shouldn't matter what focal length lens you have. The only thing that would matter would be the thread size of the lens, in which case you choose whatever step-up/step-down ring.

Even if the 2x is $80? I found a local seller for a kowa

Being $80 doesn't make the framing any less awkward. But, uh, it depends on you and what you're looking for. I was recently offered the oppurtunity to buy two Kowas for $150 but passed. My LA7200 should be arriving in a couple of days though. Gladly paid $600 for it.

Some dude in Orlando who runs a shop. If you like the footage and $80 seems like a reasonable price to you, maybe you should get it. Just remember that 2X anamorphic isn't usual and it's wiiiide framing to fill. It would be a pain in the ass to frame a feature like that IMO.

No one anamorphic adaptor will do the job for wide and tele primes. I've found that the LA7200 works extremely well for wide lenses and reasonably well up to around 100mm.

Then the Kowa/Sankor types come into their own...but are a bit more difficult to use since the camera lens needs to be focussed first and the fine focus then done with the anamorphic.

Are they a good investment? I paid between $400 and $600 for my three mint LA7200's about two months ago. The last two on Ebay sold within 24 hours for over $800.

Then there are the Iscos...

I agree, I finally got a LA7200 and its great with wide angle and I also got a Sankor 16d which is fantastic with telephoto lenses. I wrote up my first test finding here take a look:

its the second post down from the top.
Oh ya both are up for sale, if there is any interest. $425 for the LA7200 and $200 for the Sankor 16D both for $575.

That's a great price. The OP should take you up on it.

$940 plus shipping.

This is crazy. You can get new one for $809 from Adorama, ~$850 from B&H. What's the reason?

It's possible but I don't think I've ever seen any of these guys actually have the adapter in stock - always out of stock or temporarily unavailable, I'm actually curious if they're still being made at all - I have this feeling that new ones may not ever really be available again. And if you need it now, a $100 premium isn't...too bad, it's a great adapter.

Yes, I have this feeling too. I've been waiting for LA7200 to show up in B&H for over two weeks - its 'temporarily available' with estimated delivery time 7-14 days... AVAlive say they have them in stock, but it probably means nothing. Even if they'd really had I'd have though twice - lot of people have had bad experiences with them.
Still $940 is a lot. Especially considering the fact I purchased mine on Ebay for $700 :cheesy: yesterday...
