Anamorphic filter on ASP-C sensor camera question

I have watched videos about anamorphic filters that you can add to the front or rear of your lens and get a squished image, lens flare, vertical blur in the background, and are able to stretch the footage to 2.35:1.

However, I've not been able to find an article or a video that talks about what resolution the camera is set to. Do you set it to 4:3? Do you leave it at 16:9? Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks,
Steve

On a 4:3 sensor, 2x anamorphics give you a cinemascope ratio. On a 16x9 sensor 1.3x anamorphics give you a cinemascope aspect.

4x3 = 1.33:1aspect ratio
16x9 = 1.77:1 aspect ratio

Anamorphic adapters are available in 2.0x stretch and 1.33x stretch

1.33 X 2.0 = 2.66 (an extra wide CinemaScope aspect ratio)
1.77 X 1.33 = 2.35 (traditional wide screen aspect ratio)

You can use either anamorphic lens type depending on what sensor aspect you start with. You can always trim off excess from the sides of the frame in post. Or you could choose to use a hyper-wide frame, as 1.77 X 2.0 yields a 3.54 aspect ratio.

Here's an example of that extremely wide aspect ratio in popular use.
