Anamorphic 48Hour Film Project: "Alls Well that Ends Wells"

"Alls Well that Ends Wells" was our 48 hour film project for Indianapolis. I was the Editor and Director of Photography on this Project. Tony Prizevoits was the Director, and Jake Kaufman was our Audio Engineer

I used the AG-LA7200 Panasonic Anamorphic Adapter to shoot this film. It creates a 1.33 horizontal stretch witch gives you close to 2.35:1 , or scope, aspect ratio. It also tends to have some horizontal flares when shining straight into lights. We had to crop out the left side of the image at certain zoom levels because of the physical vignetting from the step down ring we had to use.

We were given the following constraints:

GENRE: Comedy
Character: Professor Cane
Line: "I'm not talking to you"
Prop: A ball

We were hoping to get something more fantasy, or drama since we were hoping to do something that could involve us shooting more anamorphic lens flares but the script didn't really justify the look. Any flares that were caught by the lens were because of the lack of any mattebox. It's difficult to fit a mattebox over the Panasonic adapter.

One of the biggest problems we ran into on set was a lack of post production crew members. Because I was shooting, we had nobody to create a base edit of the film. This took up about 4 hours of my time creating a first cut. While this doesn't seem like a lot of time, it is during the 48 hour film contest since that was 4 hours I could have been spending on color grading, or 4 hours our audio engineer, Jake Kaufman, could have spent getting a better final mix.

We used Premiere Pro CS4, and an old Sony Trinitron TV for editing and preview. Since we were publishing to a REC.601 source it was appropriate to view and monitor in SD. Luckily all Sony Trinitron TV's could be forced into a 16:9 mode via a service menu, so 16x9 squeezing a 4x3 image with the video letterboxed created a final output of 2:35:1 aspect ratio and gave us proper aspect ratio without having to do software scaling, which slows down Premiere's RT ability.

We Shot DVCProHD 1080 24Pa with a few shots at 720P for overcranking (see the end homeless people)

We used a suction cup from FilmTools to get car shots, but were ultimately cut from the final version just because they slowed down the film too much.

We used a 5D Mark II for one shot (reading the letter) just to achieve a really narrow focus. I feel like the shot blends in pretty well. Traditionally I would only use a shot from a different framerate by playing it back at the comp's native framerate to avoid any kind of jitter or frame blending. I was surprized that for the letter shot, I didn't need to adjust the playback framerate to achieve a solid result.

well done.
just one critique from the shooting side of things.
your lens is covered in dust in the shot where he is getting escorted out of his apartment
other than that looked good.

The anamorphic adapter we used has dust inside the sealed element and we cannot get it out. Combine that with scratches on the surface and it add all those unwanted things that we just cant get off.

Oh the joys of used gear. "It's in flawless shape, honest"

tbe fact that you shot in 1080 makes me happy cause i just sbot this grad project in 1080 24pa and i caught alot of flack from some ppl but i think its a great idea because the cam upscales and i would rather have the resolution and deinterlace the footage in post when i get a chane ima watch ur peice, and i know boq u felt pressed for time we shot ours for 16 straight hour and they ran outa time and wernt able to grade our peice for the pittsburgh 48 wish y guys luck

When you shoot in 1080 24PA you don't actually de-interlace the footage. The frames that you get from the Pulldown are full 1280x1080 Progressive frames. That gets upscaled to 1920x1080.

We had enough P2 cards to shoot in 1080, and the post production time wasn't any longer since we all down-resed to DV in real time via Premiere Pro.

Dirt was the least of our problems. Having time to focus using an adapter while looking through a monitor on a steady cam that's hard.

your aspect ratio is wrong on your youtube video, still squshed wrong
