An Insane Deal on the Panasonic S1R

Wanted to share this deal with those who might be interested in a full frame hybrid mirrorless. B&H has a sale on the S1R with a 24-105mm for $2312.23 that's a $2285.76 discount from the original price of $4597.97. Obviously with such a deal all the ones in stock are already gone but you can still order one at the sale price with a 2 to 4 weeks expected delivery. I was in the market for a full frame hybrid that would be good for both video and photo and this was a great timing, just ordered one with a sigma 50mm 1.4 which is also on sale. If you are interested in the S1R I am pasting the link to the deal below as it's a different link from the regularly priced S1R.

It's open box. So if you plan to resell, the margins are as good as a sealed box. You'd make about $300 on ebay less shipping.

I honestly don't care about resale value as I purchased for long term use. Remember though it comes with the 24-105mm f4 lens, it is an open box but it comes with regular warranty.

Probably more, depending on the conditions of the camera.

And, for those following the industry, you get a quick glimpse at the profit margins on cameras and their lenses. B&H is probably selling it at cost. My guess is that the "open box" in this case is made from opening up sealed boxes because the product isn't moving at all.

Which means you can get a great deal on a camera that nobody wanted.

While the S1 and especially S1H are killer for video, the S1R is the toughest sell of their whole lineup. You only buy the S1R for photo, not video, and the platform is just not ready to be a pro photo camera replacement yet for most pro shooters.

It's bleeding edge for video shooters to switch to a new mount and system, but with adapted lenses, it's totally fine. And with GHx familiarity - sure! There's a whole group of GHx shooters who this appeals to.

But pro photographers, especially those with this kind of $$$ to spend, demand native lenses. Even then, switching systems can be an arduous process. I'm not surprised at all the S1R models aren't moving.

"Nobody wanted" Most likely because of the. 1. Price 2. Lens selection and pricing 3. Contrast AF. But every camera has a weakness too. Once you take out the price of the lens you are paying about $1300 for the body, it's a no brainier.

I definitely would not recommend the S1R for videography only use as we have better options with log and 10bit. On the other hand for hybrid shooters it is a competitive camera. I handled the camera once and I can tell you it is pretty hefty and designed for professionals who appreciate pro handling and a pro design. on the other hand I handled the Sony's and could not stand it's form factor and design for pro work. I also wanted to buy the EOS R but the crop in 4k and no 60p kept me reluctant. I am for one is cheering for Panasonic to succeed in the competitive full frame market.

This will depend on several factors - what sort of firmware upgrades Panasonic will provide for it, competing models in the same price range, etc. Let's say Canon comes out with a 70MPX photo-centric camera in a couple of months and you already have a ton of EF glass. Then S1R is a paperweight. But, if you're already in the L-alliance and Panny updates the AF to the tune of the G9, then you got yourself a kick-ass piece of gear at wholesale.

I would have bought 10 and sold them on ebay if there was enough margin.

The market price would depend on several developments as mentioned above. B&H must be sitting on hundreds of them too and I wouldn't be surprised if they made a deal with other retailers to dump their inventory through them (cross-shipping). Retailers got these on a 90-day FOB from P-sonic and 90 days are about to expire and, if you're running a big chain, you're trying up huge funds in one unpopular model. P-sonic won't take them back, so you got to move them one way or the other.

PS. I mentioned in some other thread how Panasonic is against the wall with S1R. It's a part of the overall sensor deal with Sony but Sony just released A7RIV with a higher MP count, far superior auto focus (8-bit video was Sony's turn to give up something) and the identical price point. And a more popular mount to boot. In other words, looking at S1R in terms of value, it basically has none.

Panasonic just released a new firmware update recently for AF, not sure though how much of a difference it makes. If there is a company out there that continuously releases updates with new features then it is definitely Panasonic.

Concerning the camera's credibility, it really depends on your type of use. This is definitely not a sports or action camera. With the hot shoe audio adapter it would be great for interviews even as an A camera if your content will end up on the web. I can see it as a very good b-roll camera cam too. Panasonic can definitely reach a larger crowd if they can get the AF to match the G9, meanwhile I would like to see them add more video features to the S1R such as 10bit.
