An answer to "Do the Rokinon cine lenses breath?"

I don't see any breathing, and if there is any it definitely is not noticable.

These guys have other cine verion lenses?

Nothing to write home about IMHO.

I think breathing is overrated anyway.
You seldom fast rack from one end to the other.

Right now they have the cine versions of the 35mm T1.5 and the 8mm T3.8 fisheye out. Next month they'll release the 14mm T3.1 and the 24mm T1.5.

Then in October the 85mm T1.5. They are working on a 50mm T1.5 to go with it. So you can end up with a cine set of 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm all at T1.5!
You can follow them on FB. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rokinon/177519142294012

I think no breathing in a $550 lens with a maximum aperture of T1.5 plus gears, de-clicked, iris ring, long focus throw, clear T markings, and mostly sharp focus is pretty spectacular. They may not be perfect (what is?) but loose aftermarket gears and different front diameters are a hassle.

All the ones I saw say 77mm filter except the 8mm and 14mm.

My 8mm cine has the flower petal hood (and I think the 14mm does too) which works because you can't use a mattebox or threaded filters when you have 180 degree field of view and a bulging front lens.

They are using their own glass, which they have been selling for some time now. Samyang is the company that make these lenses, but they are distributed under different names including Rokinon, Walimex, Vivitar. It's all the same lenses from Samyang.

has anyone had one of these in their sweaty palms? it seems like the question we're left with is what the mechanics are like.

I have stills versions of 85mm and 35mm. For "plastic" lenses they are extremely well built and have a nice feel in"sweaty palm". Focus ring is nice and smooth, coupled with my flimsy FF it gives much nicer feel than with any auto focus lens in the same set up. Weight is nice, even with plastic outer shell... All together, worth every cent. I will be getting 24mm in cine mode for sure. Debating on 8mm (if I really need that wide, by having Tokina 11-16 already)...

a cine lens is about mechanics, that's generally what the premium is for, even in superior slr lenses. so the glass is as good and many others, but the reason we're looking for a cine lens is how it handles, and holds up over time. i guess i'm just a little curious how they pull this off for <$600.

I had a 14mm Bower still version with Canon mount. I used it on a 5Dmk11 for two years and was very pleased with the optical and mechanical build of the lens. Sold it this spring when I swithched over to Nikon and would definately buy another if I did not have a Tokina 11-16 in Nikon mount.
cheers

I have the cine version of the 8mm fisheye. Here's what I said a couple of days ago:

My Rikonon 8mm fisheye cine lens arrived. A quick review of what I consider a specialty lens:

The body is plastic, but the build is much more rugged than the cheap plastic Nikon or Canon lenses. I wouldn't want to drop it on concrete, but much sturdier than other cheap lenses. Also, the lens mount itself is metal (again, unlike the cheap Nikon lenses) and I view that as a big improvement.

The focus ring is sturdy with a nice gear built in. The ring is dampened, firm but smooth.

The iris ring is also smooth, though less dampened, and also has a gear. The T markings are crisp and clear (unlike the Sony plastic primes.)

No fisheye has great optics because its a deliberate distortion, but the optics are better on the 8mm cine than I thought they'd be.

Since the 14mm is T3.1 (F2.8) and I have the Tokina 11-16mm to cover that at F2.8, so I think I'll skip the 14mm.

As I recall the 24mm has not gotten good reviews, but i could be wrong.

I know the 14mm has barrel distortion, and is almost a semi fisheye. For me another reason to stick with the Tokina 11-16mm as its the same speed, more versatile and has almost no distortion.

So far I've seen no reviews of the 24mm Rokinon cine lens as its not out yet.
