An annoyance I can no longer stand!

I've skimmed over the manual and help, but can't find it...

How do I NOT capture in broken "takes?" I'm sick and tired of Vegas "telling me" how my clips should be organized, as opposed to how I intentionally capture them.

I'm REALLY sick of mis-labled clips, and best of all, clips broken in half, just so they can be "separate takes." (this weekend broke the camel's back; pain-in-the-ass dolly shots that were finally pulled off, but now, THEY'RE BROKEN UP in my media pool!)

Thanks for any help!

Re: An annoyance I can no longer stand!

Did you try (in the CAPTURE window) to go to:
Options->Preferences->Capture(tab) and uncheck the boxes for "Enable DV scene detection" and "Stop capture on dropped frames" ?

If not, try that and see if it helps.

Re: An annoyance I can no longer stand!

Stone's on to it. When on the capture screen go into Options->Preferences->Disk Management and set the Maximum size per DV clip to a higher number.

Re: An annoyance I can no longer stand!

Thanks, gents, will give it a whirl.

(what's up with some of these default settings?!?)

(what's up with some of these default settings)
IMO, I think it's because the manufacturer expects the worst case scenario, such as FAT32 formated disks.

Re: An annoyance I can no longer stand!

Hrm.. it sounds like you're talking about the scene detection though... as qazwsx was referring to, where Vegas tries to predict the different takes/cuts and splits the clips up accordingly.

If it's an issue with length, as in -- "every 20 minutes it splits the clip" then check out the Max Length as suggested by others.

This used to drive me insane too until I poked around in the settings, and turned off Scene Detection.

Re: An annoyance I can no longer stand!

Vegas capture's scene detection has worked perfectly for me with my DVX. It has never missed separating different takes and never split a take in the wrong place. It's the rest of the application that IMO needs help. I want a simple "save as" dialogue box where I can name and identify a location to save my clips. The whole options/preferences/disk management thing is a pain in the a** since I capture scenes to their own folders and there are many scenes on a tape. Also, after almost a year, I have yet to figure out how the whole "bin" thing works in the capture app. It seems like everything I've ever captured since I saved the default.asp (or whatever the capture file is) shows up in the damn bin. It definitely needs work.

Re: An annoyance I can no longer stand!

24Peter: do you save your capture file as a different file for each project? Or you just save the default file after every caputer? If you keep saving the default file, all captures will be present.

Bins are a great help. I usually use them after the fact, as I capture the tape first (using dv scene detection), then create bins and throw clips into each bin accordingly. You can then send this bin information to your open vegas project and all your bins will be intact in your project. Really quite helpful actually.

Tho, I too agree that the capture app needs work. Especially the necessary process one needs to go through in order to save a new project's clips to a certain folder. I think they should follow the lead of other NLEs and make project/file management a little more refined. For instance, FCP will create a new folder (in a pre-specified directory) whenever a new project is created. It will then create folders within this folder to further organize media (Render files, capture files, audio files, etc.) I think it's much better and helps quite a bit to reduce the clutter of files a single project can produce.

Re: An annoyance I can no longer stand!

Yes, I think it is the scene detection property; I just deleted and re-captured an entire day's shoot after maximizing disk/clip size...

...and STILL, it is breaking up and mis-labeling clips!!!

very frustrating indeed!

(these sorts of settings should be set to "off" as the default! I find it almost CONDESCENDING to have such things set to "on," over-riding my choice in the matter until it's too late)

Re: An annoyance I can no longer stand!

Yeah, it's funny what happens when you don't read the manual  ;)

Remember, computers are amazing things, but they aren't mind-readers.  They don't know what you want "by default".  It's clear that you're frustrated ATM, but programs are written with more than just one person in a specific situation in mind.  In truth, scene detection was a feature that the masses were asking for, so it stands to reason that once this feature was implemented, it would be "on" by default as opposed to being a hidden feature.  Remember, Vegas, like all programs, is just a TOOL.  If you don't know how to use it or take the time time to learn it, you won't get very far.

But I know how you feel, and I feel your pain.  I just went to a hardware store to buy something to pound nails into wood.  I looked all over and found something called a hammer.  It looked like a wooden stick with a piece of shaped metal at one end.  I was told this could pound nails, so I bought it and brought home.  At the store, it was hanging on the display shelf by the metal shape, so I assumed that this was the handle.  I gripped the handle and began pounding the nail with the other end of hammer.  Nothing.  I pounded and pounded and could not drive the nail into the wood.  In fact, the end of the hammer had become chipped and mangled!  Tired and frustrated, I took the hammer back to the hardware store and told them something must be wrong with my hammer.  They looked confused, so I showed them on my piece of wood (that I had yet to drive a nail into), and attempted to drive a nail into it. Then the clerk took my hammer, flipped it over and started pounding on the nail with the metal handle!  How crazy are these people?  But lo and behold, the nail started going into the wood, and soon enough, it was completely driven into the wood!  I couldn't believe it!  I was almost angry! Why the heck don't they make hammers the other way around?!  It seems much more logical to hold the wooden stick and hit the nail with the big metal end!

Re: An annoyance I can no longer stand!

Clever, witty, insightful, and smartass anecdotes aside, I did read over the manual and the help.

But working on 3 inter-related short films, instructional DVD's, working part-time, training, acting, and getting drunk doesn't leave time to worship manuals, or even be clever, for that matter.

What should be "default?" IMO, default settings should allow for maximum control by the user. Things that take absolute control away from the user (under the guise of "convenience" or "workflow" or some other b.s. catch-phrase) are nice...but should NOT be the default.

This doesn't mean it has to be a "hidden" feature.

"If you don't know how to use it or take the time time to learn it, you won't get very far."

We'll just see how "far" I get. Then again, getting far in this world seems to have little to do with passion or talent or awareness.

Actually, I would say just the opposite. Default settings should be set so that a new user can get the most out of the program. In other words, the most "convient" features should be turned on. Once one gets the hang of it, and delves into more advanced features that's when the settings and more "control" come into play. If they released the program in advanced mode (with all the convient features turned off by default), it would get horrible reviews, and nobody would take the time to learn it out of frustration. Trust me, I develop software for a living. If all this stuff was turned off by default, you wouldn't be using it right now...nobody would.

That may be true about the masses...try not to think about them.

As for me using it, there's almost no doubt I still would be, as there's one reason and one reason only I started using using Vegas: true 24 fps editing.

If Premiere Pro had 24pA support, I'd had probably be using it now. Although I DO like Vegas overall, and am glad I switched for other reasons as well.

Wow, if it wasnt for this site, I probably would have gotten rid of Vegas. That was exactly what I needed to know. Now that I've gotten past that problem, I'm on to the next..lol..always a problem in this film production stuff.. But can anyone tell the retard how to save different clips of video to created bins. I can right-click and create a new bin with no problem but actually saving my selected video to the desired bins is still a mystery.. Is this another case of me not knowing about factory settings?

What you have to do is:
1. Create your video bin (ahead of time before capture).
2. Select (highlight) the bin that you want the captured video footage to go to.
3. Open Vegas Video capture and capture video clips like normal
4. Your captured video clips will be placed in the selected bin.

If you wanted to capture to a new folder, then just go back to Vegas (You don't have to close Vegas capture utility), and just select a different folder.

You also can obviously just drag and drop the clips where ever you like after capturing also.
