an anamorphic christmas (Hot Rod PL + 1973 Lomo)

so i had been messing around with the panasonic anamorphic adapter for a while, but it was soft at larger apertures and doesn't produce the oval OOF areas which are one of the greatest things about anamorphic photography. since i wanted to get a handheld rig/rod adapter anyway and since the iscorama lenses are scarce/selling for thousands of dollars, i decided to buy up an old (1973, for maximum artifacty weirdness) lomo square front and the Hot Rod PL adapter.

here's my first bunch of shots.. just messing around over christmas:

thanks for looking. and happy new year everyone!

Seriously...seriously cool! What a sweet rig! Where did you find that Lomo!?!?!?! What's the focal length and how fast is it? That's just killer. The GH1 is such a cool, adaptable camera.

thanks apocalypse! i knew you'd enjoy it! the REDUSER 'equipment for hire' is a good source for the lomo's. mine came all the way from russia. it could use a clean inside, but it's decently collimated it seems. infinity focus seems correct. close focus is about 3.5'. there are 2 square diopters lomo made for this lens to get the focus closer, i dont have them though. but the crop factor on the GH1 means that the 3.5' gives a rather perfect choker close-up.

its a 50mm, 2x anamorphic squeeze. the lens front says f/2, the aperture ring says T/2.4.
its heavy, and the focus is a bit tricky.. not bad though, it is geared but i've yet to try it with a follow focus.
the footage is 3.56:1 when you unsqueeze it so you need to crop the sides. i shot 1080P and cut this footage in a 1440x540 timeline for a 2.67:1 aspect.

also, i'm loving the Hot Rod adapter/handheld kit, even with just my canon fd's its great!

jeeeez that was wicked! that last frame grab you posted looks like it came straight out of a movie, the skin tones look great!

love the flares :)

It looks like from the movie because of double lines on bokeh.
Whats the widest lens you can attach it to ?Or you cant take it off from 50mm ?

its a 50mm prime lens not an adapter (acutally its a prime lens and an adapter but they are housed together in one body and are focused simultaneously) so i cant use it with a wider lens. there is a 35mm lens of this vintage though.

Can you take it apart :D and check with wider than 50mm ? Or rear glass is bent like front glass and its not just 50mm and anamorphic front ?

the 50mm is just a spherical prime.. but theres no way im taking this thing apart haha.
and considering the anamorphic element on the front of the 35mm prime lens is almost twice as wide as mine, im just going to guess that a wider lens wouldnt work well with the front of my lens.

Anamorphic lens assembly isn't something for somebody to just tinker with.

Congrats with your 50mm!
I have the 35,50, and 80. They have a great look to them.

hey, thanks matty! im loving the look so far. im hoping to finish the set eventually too.

loved your monsterfest work by the way!

looking good. Did the anamorphic adapter have much to do with the cool lens flare in some of the interior shots or the quality of the outdoor snow shots?

hey asteele, the anamorphic elements in the lens are the cause for the distinct look of the flares.

thanks for watching.

just took some shots with a series 9 schneider optics +2 diopter. looked good and sharp, cool bokeh. obviously too close for faces, but should be nice for inserts and such.

here is a sample..lens wide open, iso 3200.

How close were you to the subject when using that diopter? I've tried a +1 Close Up with the Panasonic adapter (In between the lens and the adapter) but wasn't able to get a usable image. Does the diopter need to be in front of the anamorphic lens element?

i believe the diopter needs to be between the subject and the anamorphic element. so you'd need to strap one onto the front of the panny adapter. (im using a series 9 holder and camera tape haha)

i'd say this +2 brings focus down to about 1 foot. i want to try a +1.. i think it'd give a great eyebrows to chin ECU of a face.

Just wanted to clarify.. this is the diopter with the Panasonic adapter, or with the Lumo lens?

From the oblong bokeh I am guess the Lumo??

Thx.
