Americans on the board...

I found the standard dimensions of bowling balls on google myself, but did not choose to include it in my argument because it was equally irrelevant to the subject that you chose to opine on.

No need to read or reply to my statement unless you plan on rational discussion. As a book reading snob who prefers facts to support suppositions, I think there is a cultural difference in our basic understandings of the word truth. I do wonder if most video people are as against fact based discussions as you are.

I have had the great fortune of living in both the US and Canada and find that both fine countries have there great advantages and disadvantages.

But it can't be defined on a grand scheme..I have met some good Americans and some bad Americans...I have meet some good Canadians and some shitty Canadians.

With a nod to Austen Powers.

I think that all nations and all people should live and work together in harmony. All nations bring something good to the table of the international feast, and we need more understanding of the different cultures of our globe. And I absolutely dispise people who are bigoted or dislike a certian people. The only thing I hate worse than bigots are Canadians.... ;D

Re: Americans on the board...

This was the last thing I thought would happen when I started this thread...but what can I say...I'm a "loud, cocky, overbearing, ungrateful" American asshole :P ... and damn proud my country can kick some ass if need be it...

Re: Americans on the board...

I would never slag my Canadian brethren!

Sigh, these political discussions have such an air dont they? :-/

Re: Americans on the board...

Look Slapdragon, I'm tired of talking about politics. You know more facts to support your arguments because you're older and well read, but that doesn't make you right in my book. I don't care how smart you are or how educated you are, nothing you can say will change my mind because I know that you're a biased source of information... and your bias is a conservative one, which makes you even less credible to me. If you were truely objective, I might trust you and be convinced by you. You have an agenda just like Michael Moore and I'm going to take what you say with a large grain of salt.

Unfortunately, I wasn't around to read newspapers durring most American wars (maybe you were?), so I have to get my information by looking at history websites, watching the history channel, and yes I do occaisionally pick up a book about history. I've got a couple of history books that I haven't yet read, so maybe we could pick up this conversation when I'm better armed with facts and information.

But really, don't you think it's sad that an "oral historian" like yourself feels the need to log onto message boards and debate people who aren't even in your league? I'm no historian and I never claimed to be. I form opinions based on what historians say (one's I trust). Why don't you take your opinions and argue with Howard Zinn or Noam Chomsky? You probably wouldn't have the balls to argue with a liberal with your level or education. It really comes off as sad and pathetic that you've got to pick a verbal fight with an average bum for his opinions on a CAMCORDER WEBSITE!.

You can have the last words, but let's please let this drop. I'm sorry I called you an elitist snob, but that's just how you came off to me. I'm sure you don't even realize how you seem to a person like me. Let's talk about camcorders and agree to disagree. :-*

Re: Americans on the board...

Wow!!! What a thread?

First, let me start out by saying, belately, Happy 4th of July. I love the USA. We may well be the greatest country on the planet, but that does not mean we don't have some warts. Does the US do good in the world? Heck yes. Has the US done bad in the world? Heck yes. I think on a whole, we've done more good than bad.

Tony_H, buddy. I love your spunk. I think most of your points are right to some measure, but I think you paint the bad action of the US with a big brush and use a small brush for the good things. Step back and look at both sides and please don't close you mind to new ideas.

Slapdragon, Thanks for mostly well reasoned arguements. You know more about debating and history than I'll forget. Sometimes I think you took a bit too much glee in batting Tony_H around, but I think he needed a some minor spanking for coming on too strong.
I do have one quibble, in your final arguement you chastise Tony_H because he does not support reparations for the Native American folks through selling off his worldly possessions. I don't agree with your bashing him this way because he doesn't want to fix a problem that was caused by people 100 plus years ago and just because he doesn't do this doesn't make screwing over the Native Americans any less of a travesty. I'm sorry, but the white men screwed the Native Americans seven ways to Sunday. Is there much we can do about it now? No, just try to help give an even chance to their children and maybe help them with incentives and the like.
Otherwise I think you're right on in your debates.

Ranger, You came on mighty strong on Tony_H. At first, I thought you might be a warmongering pig dog lackey to "The Man", ; ) but I think you're later statements brought me to understand you and appreciate you. I thank you for your service to out country and protecting our freedom to debate just like this.

I'll close by saying, I don't support the current actions in Iraq and would love to see Bush out of office. I think he did good with the war in Afganistan, but somehow wavered away from the war on terror for this misguided war in Iraq which had little or nothing to do with the war on terrorism. But, hey that my opinion and it doesn't mean I don't support our troops. They are our country's finest. I don't think we'll even go back to the days when people will spit on our returning soldiers and I'd personally kick the ass of anybody who did so.

I have to go cook dinner, otherwise I think I'd ramble on for several more aimless paragraphs.

Take care all,

Scott

Re: Americans on the board...

That's a good summary Scott. I'm no good at debating because I get too angry too fast. That's why I'd rather just not do it in the first place. I'd prefer to just throw my .002 in and leave it at that. I paint the dark side of America with such a big brush because I think the positive stuff is over emphasized by others. We need a little balance people!

At least this message board is Canada based because if were owned by an American I'd probably be banned by now. If anything good came out of this discussion, I got to know Slapdragon and what he's about. Plus, thanks to him and this huge thread, I'm now a Silver Member ;D ;D :D ;) :) ;) :D >:( :o :o 8)

That's all well and good, but it's a luxury you don't get in a free society.

I agree, which is why I made the point. People who become hyper critical of institutions often dredge up any criticism they can find from the far past to justify their current contempt. When someone uses something from that far back that is fixable, then I say why do you not fix it?

First off, I would simply let you off the hook and say, well, bully for you, except I think you are sort of disengenious here. Why do you feel that you are allowed to say anything you want and be lauded it for it, but when people point out the what you say is wrong they are somehow nefarious, or picking on little kids, or pathetic. I come to this forum because it seems to include intelligent people who are stable professionals in this field. Because of that, I assume that anyone who claims a biological age over 21 is probably capable of intellectually handling themselves.

Second, I did not pick a verbal fight with you. I have not yet spoken to you in person, and never have indeed spoken to you. I have been in maybe twenty fights in the past five years, and had to be verbally assertive in maybe fifty or sixty cases. But I have yet to pick a fight in all that time.

Third, I do not engage in arguments with liberal or conservative idealogues, but that said your claim that I do not have the "balls" to have an intellectual discussion with someome of my own ability must be based on your personal experience of my academic record. If you desire to defame me in the public, please put it all forward. Who was present at my last major paper defense? What was the title of one of my papers? Tell me how you came by this information that I was unwilling to discuss history with someone of my own ability? I am curious since it is my academic reputation you are running down.

Re: Americans on the board...

Ok, I'm not arguing anymore and I am letting this drop, but just a quick answer to a couple of things:

Why do you feel that you are allowed to say anything you want and be lauded it for it
Sometimes it's best to just let people have their opinions and beliefs unless you are looking for a fight.

Second, I did not pick a verbal fight with you. I have not yet spoken to you in person, and never have indeed spoken to you.
verbal means "consisting of words". you can do it on a message board.

I have been in maybe twenty fights in the past five years, and had to be verbally assertive in maybe fifty or sixty cases.
Do you realize that that's an insanely high number? I don't take any **** from anyone and I haven't been in a fight for at least five years. You must be a... well, I'm not going to start with the name calling. Nevermind.

I did say probably didn't I? I don't know that for a fact, that's why I used the word "probably".

You still seem a little argumentative Slapdragon. I'm ready for a truce or are you having too much fun?

Fifty felony arrests under my belt, I am lucky that only twenty people fought in four - five years.

The truce, there is no war. If you had not made an unfounded accusation, I would not have replied. You have a problem with making wild claims and then getting upset when people call you on them. Best idea for you -- restrain your hands and you will run into less problems. Talk out of your ass, and people can and will call you on it. If it is a simple mistake, like not knowing the transmission factor on ND6, then no one will worry, but some stuff seriously effects your credibility.

Nah, you know what? Screw you. I don't want a truce with a d1ckhead like you. I'd prefer it if you didn't like me.

Slapdragon, I think you're a liar. There's nothing I hate worse than a liar. You have no credibility, I think you're talking out of your ass, and if you have 50 felony arrests you should probably be getting raped by a rather large African American right now. Even if you're telling the truth, you're probably scum if you've been arrested that many times. You can't even vote! Now I know that the guy at the gas station's opinion is just as important as yours... more important! What does a geek like you do to get arrested, felony research? No, seriously what kind of stuff does a scumbag criminal like yourself get arrested for?  :) ;) :D ;D >:( :( :o 8) ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-/ :-*

I respectfully put forward that you are a moron.  I have never been arrested before in my life, but have 50 felony arrests under my belt.

Question to the intelligent members of our forum: How can this quandry be solved?  How can someone have fifty felon arrests under their belt, yet never have been arrested before? A free chocalate chip cookie to the first person who can explain to our intellectual giant here.
