America -> Ireland : Power conversion?

Hi guys,

I'm off to Ireland in a couple of weeks to shoot a feature doc. We're bringing an HVX, a firestore, a few Lowel lights, a powerbook, a couple external HDDs and our cell phones (2 iphones and a new smartphone).

Can anyone tell me about the power situartion? We're going to buy some converters, do we need to get anything special to avoid blowing fuses or exploding our equipment? I figure the battery chargers for the HVX should be fine, but I'm concerned about the HDDs, powerbook and lights.

Is this all pretty much standard stuff?

Check the power supplies on the HDDs and and the powerbook, I'm sure they will all be rated up to 22v+

You will need to get 220v bulbs for your lights though, or you will blow the 110v bulbs the second you switch them on. Bulbs will be cheaper than a power converter that can handle the power needed for video lighting.

All the electronics should work just fine, need to have the physical adapter plugs to be able to use their outlets. Look at the back of your AC adapters, they usually say 110-240VAC as all the modern electronics is made for worldwide use. Not so with the lights. The bulbs need to be replaced with the 240VAC equivalent. Do not try to look for the voltage converters for them, they need huge power...

Beautiful you guys, thanks. I'll put in the request for the 240VAC bulbs. And for everything else it's just adapters? Hopefully we can get it all ordered this week.

Just don't assume the power supplies for the other things are multi. Check them. Some manufacturers are still idiots.

Question... I saw this at another forum: http://www.2-popforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=258486

Basically they're talking about issues w/ flickering lights in other countries... since the voltage is different and we'll be running 240VAC bulbs, will that cause flickering to be seen in the footage? I've never seen my Lowels flicker, although I can see it easily in flourescents. Is this filmmaker talking about flourescent style lights?

Overall this doesn't sound like it would be a big issue, but i'm just curious.

The default shutter for 24P is 1/48

SynchroScan it to 1/50 and the flicker is gone + no one will notice the difference between 1/48th and 1/50th.

(Don't just set it to 1/50th...the freq may not be exact. I think my house is hovering around 1/49.5th.
