Ame = evil?

I know this is a funny video but when I see things like ghosting and blocking. It messes the experience up for me. If you watch the action on the talent you see ghosting and if you watch under his chin you'll se the blocking. It's not Vimeo compression because I see it in the original export from After Effects and its worse when I export from Adobe Media Encoder.

Any Ideas besides abandoning my editing platform? Ghosting.jpg

The original export "without sound effects" from AE doesn't have this slop in it.
I put it in a PP timeline avchd 720p 23.97 add sound files and export to HDTV 720 23.97 20mbps. ("I think" not at my machine atm)

Is "frame blend" turned on? $5 says it is (I think it's the default in CS4). If I remember right, select all the clips in the PP timeline, right click, and somewhere there should an option to uncheck frame blend. I've been on CS5 for a while where it's not an issue, so my memory is a little hazy, but I think that's the fix.

I honestly have no idea why it's set to be on as the default, but I used to notice the same sort of thing, and it usually went away when I turned off frame blend.

I see it in this video and I thought I saw it in your other video on vimeo also. If you're absolutely not seeing it out of the After Effects render (frame blending?) then you're down to something in Premiere or the encoder.

First -- I've never had this issue, ever. The closest I've had was back in HDV days with some bad setting somewhere in the chain dealing with interlaced footage.

So, if it wasn't an un-ideal shutter thing with your camera, and if it wasn't some bad setting in AE or Keylight issue, then I can only conclude with the likely unwelcome reaction that you're doing something wrong with your AME settings.

Make sure your pixel aspect ratio is 'square pixel,' render at maximum bit depth, be absolutely certain your framerate is 23.976, try a higher profile like 4.0, increase your bit rate, do two passes instead of one, make absolutely sure you're not using previews, select render at maximum quality... Know your settings, don't blindly rely on some preset.

As I've never had this issue, I simply can't conclude that "AME=evil" and that you've done everything correctly.

I missed that he was using CS4. Yeah -- this may be exactly right.

In CS5 they removed frame blending from Premiere and made it an option in AME that is unchecked by default, thankfully.

If it's just frame blending I'll mail you that $5 cause it's been driving me insane since march 09. I don't get much work and i'll bet it has a whole lot to do with my finished projects. Just to clearify I don't need to find a different export workflow to clean this footy up? ie. exporting lossless and rerendering with x264.

If it's just frame blending, than no. But I would try that first since it's a simple fix and see if that's the solution.

Yep frame blending was one of the problems I totally re edited this composition last night and I think my other problem is the white level in keylight I have replaced the video on vimeo with this one.

It's a whole lot noisier. I'm gonna spend a few more hours on this thing tonight trying to reduce this noise without making the talent opaque and then I'm done. Thank you to everyone who commented nobody gave me any advice in the footage section.

As a side note -- the render at maximum quality option in the CS4 version of AME is well hidden. From memory (I no longer have a version of it anywhere) you need to click or right click on some tiny paragraph icon on the main (default, first panel that opens) panel and select the render at maximum or best quality. It's never checked by default, and to my knowledge you could never make it the default -- meaning you always had to check it with each render. Also, from memory, there was some tricky check issue, so I had to look at it twice to verify it was checked. And, yes, it makes a difference.

All of these issues have been fixed in CS5 -- and it's now prominent and easy in AME.
