Amazing film shot by Macgregor w/ DVX+Cinemek

I don't think this is a dvx. The slo mo looks like it's about 40-50% speed and DEFINITELY progressive. If you have ever done slo mo at 40% speed of material shot at 60i it can't compare. Day and night. Probably hvx.

This was shot prior to the release of the HVX.

I believe that McGregor used a dvx in combination with the pal version of the sony fx1 for similo. Beautfil work.

Another Similo thread? No other guerilla movie has ever gotten this much attention. Never ever. (Good thing it's deserved attention.)

And there is grain! Better quality h.264 version of Similo shows it and even that Smile short shows it pretty well actually.

I still don't get why those slow-mos look THAT good though. I believe it's mostly because the lightning in this short is so freakin beautiful that it completelly hides other flaws in the pictures.

I agree, "smile" is lit very well, but when the character is outside waiting for the bus there is one shot, which is a low angle close up of the albino, where you see
a great amount of visible grain. But all in all, it looks very nice and clean.

RED camera? I think this was shot on 35mm. So she replaced an old robot that got it's legs smashed(?) with a new robot, but was dipressed because it wasn't the old robot?

It's cheaper to get a whole new robot when the legs get smashed. Kind of like when a firewire port burns out on a Mac, you just get a whole new computer. But then, the guilt and depression sets in. That was your sex robot. What were you thinking just throwing it away and getting a brand new identical sex robot?

(you're right this is kind of a weird plot.)

Where is macgregor? He wanna chime in here? Apparently we are DYING to know how he achieved such a look...

Rick

From any BTS shots or descriptions he's given, it seems he does it with the most simple of setups. Usually with nothing but a reflector and available light. The man just knows how to get a great exposure for the look he wants. He does some tweaks in post, but nothing very revolutionary.

Plus i think he has some magical prototype of the g35. Perhaps he found it in the glove compartment of the Bluesmobile. I don't know.

Basically, he can shoot. Period.

Wow, I'm really surprised this thread is coming in so late in the game. There are other threads about SIMILO out there on dvinfo.net I think. It was shot on DVX100A with a non-moving GG G35. The beta version I am pretty sure. We actually were the first to shoot with the Beta, and I have to say that even compared to the M2 adapters, Letus35, etc... It is the best non-moving adapter out there. The mini35 is a big step up though.

You can definitely see the non-moving grain in a couple of spots in SIMILO. Namely at 2:47, and especially if you blow the video up. It is very apparent.

I am not so sure he used a huge amount of slow mo. That's what I originally thought, but after watching this a bunch of times, it looks like a lot of these shots were filmed smoothly and that the actors actually moved pretty slowly as well. BUT, yes there are definitely a couple of places where he must have shot 60i or 50i then slowed it by 50%.

A lot of people in other forums have had a hard time believing this was shot on a DVX100A because of how crisp it looks. but keep in mind that this is export is smaller than the actual video size and that the H.264 codec REALLY smooths out small imperfections big-time.

Of course it's magical, how else would he get all those naked chicks act in his movies?

The company he works for ;)

Yes, it's dvx+g35 footage. No, it isn't andromeda. Yes, it looks that way because of amazing cinematography/CC'ing skill. I've let him know about this thread, hopefully he'll be able to put to rest all the myths. In the meantime, I'm gonna go watch it again.

Cheers

Hahahhaa, funny topic here. Some missundertood is almost funny.
As Advan Tech said, there is nothing really strange there. No andromeda whatsoever.

For the real link go to www.mysimilo.com

There was some confusion at a time in dvinfo because some one was posting a non finshed cut of the story which i did not like. It is ok to post this now, alltough i cannot compete in any film fests since we are realising a 20 min 35mm new version of the film this year and the producer asked as not to go on with the old one.

THanks for the nice comments!
