Amateur needs to know how to use this unit!!

Help! My boss just bought me a 100A to film a presentation at a major client - tomorrow! Oh yeah, I'm the marketing guy! Feel like a scooter user who just got a Ferrari! So, which mode should I use to shoot? Details are as follows: indoor setting (flourescent lighting), presentation will end up on web presentation, expect to have direct mic input (from lapel mic, expect to use one input). I was planning on using as much auto as possible and am unsure about the AWB settings. Based on other posts, the 30P mode seems to make sense as destination is the web. Can you tell I am in way over my head!!

Hmmm -- I'll take it off your hands if it is too much for you. I'll even pay shipping!!!! ;D

Ok -- stick with 30P. It will look great. I changed my settings of F6 to 30P and kept everything else the same and love it. You might want to change F2 to 30P and keep everything else the same. F2 is the SCENE FLUORESCENT.

If you have a white balance card you might want to use it. Move the slider to A or B and then there is a little button on the front of the camera (same side as the controls) that you can push to set. Or, you can use one of two presets... slide the selector down to Preset and then push that button... once gives you 5.6 (outdoor light) and the other is something else for something else... I really don't know... 3.something. Maybe that's indoor?

Use auto for everything else and you should get through. But again, I'd be happy to take it off your hands.

You're going to be...all right  :).

Set your Scene Selector dial to F2 (Fluorescent).

Change your frame rate in the F2 scene file to 30p.

White balance on a sheet of white paper in the position where the headest of the head honchos will be sitting.

Plug your lav into the INPUT 2 connector (it's got an XLR connector, right?)

Set the Channel 1 select switch to INPUT 2.

Set the Channel 2 select switch to INPUT 2.

Make sure the INPUT 2 switch on the front of the camera is set to MIC (not LINE).

Make sure the INPUT 2 switch on the *side* of the camera is set to ON (48V phantom power).

Test the lav volume by speaking normally and setting Channel 1 level indicator so you're hitting 1-2 bars into the red.

Set the Channel 2 level indicator so you're not lighting any red bars. (your insurance channel)

This should work for you.

Re: Amateur needs to know how to use this unit!!

Are you supposed to edit the proj and then present it on tape, CD or DVD? Will you have to incorporate the "web presentation" as part of the edit?

(feel free to answer these questions after you have followed the posts above mine) :)

Re: Amateur needs to know how to use this unit!!

Thank you so much for the encouragement and advice on how to setup the camera. The final product will be a web presentation - not to film or DVD, just the web. Will be some editing involved (software recommendations?) but mostly will let this presentation run as is.

Have the settings as advised and now, a new problem... when I press record, I get this message: External DV Disconnect. What does this mean? Can't find a reference in the manual. Also, any other books/guides you recommend for better use of the camera's capabilities? Books from 4 Years of Film school not the right answer! Thanks again for all the help!

Is a tape in the mechanism?

Check the menu settings under "recording setup" -- you might have it set to EXT, in which case the DVX won't try to record to its own tape, it'd try to control an external recorder through firewire. And if you don't have one hooked up through firewire, you'd get that message. Set it to INT and you should be good to go.

The DVX has the capability to record to say a DSR11 and record to DVCAM? That's kinda usefull if that is right. Is that right?

DV passthrough on the firewire allows this. Remember, DVCAM and DVC-Pro all use the same DV25 codec, they just have different strikes to tape.

Yep, that's correct.
