am I going to ruin my camera?

I have a relatively new dvx100a. I've only shot a feature on it which put about 50 hours on the heads. I shot everything with MQ only.

1. I'm planning on capturing 35 hours from the dvx to firewire to my G5. I will capture full tapes at a time to minimize the running on the heads (as oppesed to a logged capture)
- am I fooling myself? will playing 35 hours of tape through the camera seriously bring down the life span of the dvx? i know i should get a deck but no more budget :(

2. 4 one hour tapes that need to be captured that were shot on a different camera. They are the sony premium (lubricated) tapes
-Will I screw up the my heads if I use the dvx to capture these?

Thanks :)

Re: am I going to ruin my camera?

buy an old mini dv camera. #2 will most likely screw up the heads. 35 hours on the heads is a bit much. i think it would reduce the lifespan of the camera. why not spend another 150$ on a real cheap mini dv cam and get some more time from your camera? you owe it to yourself.

Re: am I going to ruin my camera?

hmm... i had a canon xl-1 and shot 2 features and about 20 short films and music videos with it. i reviewed, catalogued and captured everything through the camera, and never had a single problem in the four years i used it. i can only guess, but i'm thinking i logged probably about 300 hours on it...
why would the dvx be any different as far as standing up to the job. it's made to record and playback after all...

i've only logged about 50 hours on my dvx in the past 3 months since getting it, and i don't intend on using it any differently than the canon.
use it, damn it!!!! let it feel your wrath! :P

You've got balls.

Re: am I going to ruin my camera?

I think it's just a question of prudence. If you have an alternative for capture, why put the wear and tear on your DVX?

Re: am I going to ruin my camera?

I think Jarred has a cam with over 400 hours on it. Mine's up around 250, but I use a deck for capture. DVX's should be good for 1000 hours, I would think.

Re: am I going to ruin my camera?

thanks for the quick response!

but what about capturing the sony premium lubricated(!) tapes?

if ever, if I captured that stuff first, would the dry lubricated 35 following hours "CLEAN" my heads?(!)

thanks :)

Re: am I going to ruin my camera?

Michael summers answered your question about the sony tapes.

(he said that they would probably be bad on the heads)

Re: am I going to ruin my camera?

yes, i have tried usng a dry lube tape to a normal wet lubricationed cam and the results were terrible. the second i pressed record it said head cleaning.

Re: am I going to ruin my camera?

Buy a Pv-Dv103 about 120$ on ebay. It reads the Dvx100a time code. I've never used my DVX to record.

When I owned the Sony VX9000, I used to mix tapes, capture the footage I shot with the camera, and I never had any problem.
But, that was back then. The DVX is the precious, and I am not doing that with the precious. :D

I think everyone has gone paranoid with the DVX.

Re: am I going to ruin my camera?

imagine buyong a cinealta and having to playback off it all the time . . . . I was working with a small crew and that was the case. On board we had an engineer from sony . . . I asked about this issue and he said that the camera is built to tho this and more. Playback is not as engaging as recording for the camera he said . . . I still bought myself a deck though for my little dvx ;)

Re: am I going to ruin my camera?

thanks guys, i met with a buddy yesterday and he's going to borrow a camera from another buddy for me to capture the 4 sony tapes :) as for the mq tapes, i'm just going to go for it on the dvx... thanks for all you help!

Re: am I going to ruin my camera?

Ok, I have read all the posts, almost on this issue. How about secondary transfer? I use a Panasonic gs50 for playback, this camera has had sony tapes played on it also. I use it for both.

Re: am I going to ruin my camera?

Ok so I'm curious (brace yourself for newbie questions):

1. The manual says the heads are good for 1000 hours. So after that you have to replace the heads? Or is it just a possibility? Anyone been down this road and how much does it cost?

2. When I capture into an NLE, or playback my tapes, does that add to the 'hours' counter in the camera?

Re: am I going to ruin my camera?

Yes that adds to the hours.

I've had the camera for about 20 months now, and have somewhere around 300 hours. I know Jarred's got a lot more, but I don't think he's even up to 500 hours yet.
