Am I crazy....

but I could've sworn I overheard a guy talking about using the built in ND filters aren't a good idea to use (I didn't hear the reason).

I bring this up because I'm shooting outside where the only way I can see the image is to click the filter on. But then I remembered the conversation I overheard and got worried. Am I being paranoid or are there really situations when using the built in nd filters aren't a good idea. Thanks.

The built in ND filters are great, you most defenitly SHOULD use the built in ND's when the lighting situation calls for it.

I've heard that the internal ND filters in the camera are gels, which are apparently not as good quality as high end glass ND filters. That being said, I'm used to using the built-in ND's for years on many pro cameras, so I just use 'em.

Would be interesting to see a comparison test sometime, to see if there is actually a noticable quality difference.

IMO, you can shoot very beautiful professional images with the built-in ND's.

The built in filters in the DVX are great, top notch.

I have noticed considerable image degredation when using the built-in filters on an XL1 I used to use. Happened in the long end of the lens, made the image look like crap. Could just be that particular camera but once I saw that, it was the start of my loss of love for the XL1....
