Alzo vs Flolight fluorescents?

I have not seen any direct comparison between the 2 and at the same price point, I think we should consider looking into it.
I'm talking about the 4 bank version (for argument's sake).

ALZO - $415
http://www.adorama.com/AZV1775.html

FLOLIGHT - $449
http://www.adorama.com/FFFL220AWD.html

They have more or less the same features - the Flolight comes with a wireless dimmer (??) but Alzo comes with an eggcrate ( I couldn't find that option for the flolight). But the mounts are pretty different and I have I am not sure about the bulbs ( might replace them all anyway). Alzo has been around for a while but not sure that's a good thing anymore. And yes, I know about Cool Lights but their similar model starts at $600 and eggcrate is optional for $35 or so.

Any thoughts?

I've been using 6 of the Alzo Quads and Twins for green screen and on-location interviews for a few years now. For the price they are well built, reliable and put off a good amount of light. Also, I think Alzo has a 15% off valentines sale for the next few days so that might make a big difference to you. I've never used the Flolights personally.

These look pretty nice. I went to the site. I didn't see any "eggcrates." I use them on my Divas all the time. Can you get them for these? They seem like a great deal

All the Alzo lights come with a aluminum/plastic honeycomb grid which you can see it on the product photo on the website. I don't use them much because I prefer the fabric diffuser, but I think the function is similar or identical. You could always get the generic fabric ones, cut them to size and mount them on the barndoors.

yeah, I meant honeycomb - and their function is not to difuse but to focus the light

I meant to compare honeycombs and eggcrates and that I prefer using more diffused light vs. focused light for what I do. Sorry I wrote it in kind of a confusing way.

There are a lot of the asian flos on the market now - I have several that look exactly like the flolight model you posted.

One of the big differences between these things is the yokes - wimpy yokes, sort of "head bracket" things that aren't yokes at all... on the twins it's horizontal vs. vertical. Take a good look and make sure the way the light is aimed works for you.

I'd think eggcrates are more valuable than diffusers for flos - keep in mind most "included" diffusers are really a pain to use, if they're the kid that slip over the barn doors. Generally if you want to diffuse one of these, you're pointing it at a frame since they're fairly soft already.

I don't know where they are made but their sales and support is in the US, knowledgeable guys too. Much better in this regard than "Ebay brand" lights at least.

I'll admit, the weak spot in the design is the "universal mount" that connects the light to the stand. You REALLY have to tighten the screw at the top if you want to mount it at certain angles and not worry about it sagging.

on the twins it's horizontal vs. vertical

I don't know exactly what you mean by this. The design is pretty clever, there is a recessed channel running all around the outside edge that the mount hooks into so you can position it horizontally or vertically from any side.

I just got a pair of the older (rotary dimmer) Alzo twins from their outlet, and they ran out of the outlet ones before I could get them, so they sent me the newer slider dimmer ones at the same cost. They're very well built, definitely heavier than a Divalite but not really heavy in the grand scheme of things. I haven't had a proper shoot with them yet, but I'm impressed with the test shots I've done. Their shipping was also pretty incredible. They got it to me in 2 days with the free shipping, granted it was just from CT to MA.

...and thanks for that coupon! I just ordered a quad for a ridiculous $360...
