alternatives to Zoom recorder

Does anyone have any alternatives to the Zoom H4n they'd recommend for recording separate sound for a HDSLR? Price range similar or slightly more to the Zoom.

Nothing in the same price range is going to gain you much. The TASCAM DR100, perhaps, but marginally. The next step up is the FOSTEX FR-2LE. After that, it's the TASCAM DR-680 or HD-P2.

All of this, of course, assumes the use of external microphones and not the built-in.
