Alternative storage for HVX200

Just a quick question for anybody in the know, I am keen to get a HVX200 but like many others
find the P2 memory card system a bit limiting for the cost, I have seen the firestore but again this a 3rd of the price of the camera (in the UK anyway).

So in a search for a more viable solution i came across this, it basically allows you to read write a microdirve on your laptop via the same slot as the P2 and the principle is the same as the P2 as I understand. Total cost for this and a 8GB microdrive and card is £160 (dollars I guess would be around $280 probably less without VAT).

Anybody tried this or would have any idea if it would work????
Also has anybody come across anything else other than the rip off P2.........

thanks Add

Won't work; no traditional PCMCIA adapters will work. It has to have all the intelligence and electronics and communications hardware that the P2 card has.

(Well put. - and why is this in the grabs/footy section?)

Because im new to the site and I was in the wrong section when I posted the thread, a simple mistake............please feel free to remove the thread if this is causes an issue I have got the answer I was looking for. Thanks Barry

those microdrives are also Terrible in the field. I had a compact flash audio recorder that could use this type of drive or a CF card. These drives make a terrible amount of noise... bad for audio.. and they CRASH an aweful lot and very unreliable...

Also, I would beg to differ on what you call rip off P2 cards. First of all.. if you buy between now and the end of the year you get a free 8 gig P2 card. Now that would be enough to get by for a little while and it's FREE...

2nd... The camera delivers the goods visually and the only other cam I owned or used that could do this that was something I couuld own... was my old film camera and that price was prohibeted expensive... This footage looks awesome for the investment in P2...

Finally, I've probably shot 200 hours of HD to date now... At 5 dollars a mini DV tape if this was an HDV camera... that would almost be the cost of the P2 and such convenience. Never having to buy tape again...

I'd say there are some good reasons to get the cam now.. and the first is that darn free P2 card. That's a whopper!

p2 cards are new, and yes very expensive, but give it time they will get cheaper, just like memory cards for dslrs did. the only problem with p2 right now is back up but that will get better with time too...having a tape to go back to that you know will work is nice.
