Alternative devices for playback

As a fairly new user of the DVX, I have become concerned about the threads posted regarding dirty heads and premature wear of these heads if the camera is regularly used for pllayback purposes. I really am not too excited about the prospect of spending another $1,000 to $1,500 on a DV deck. I was tossing around the idea of buying an inexpensive Mini DV camera and using it as a device for downloading footage to my computer. Would this method allow me to preserve 24p footage? Are these cameras capable of transferring all the image quality produced while filming with the DVX?

Yes. The DVX records all the footage 29.97 to tape. It puts pull down flags on footage shot 24p so that way you can extract the 24 footage from the 29.97 recording. Using a small camera like a sony or somthing will not hinder this. It will still bring in the footage just like it would if you are using a deck or the DVX. Once the footage is on mini dv no resalution can be gained or lost it is now DV. Now this is when you us the firewire in/out if you are using other wise it could lose some resalution depending on the conection standered AV (RCA), SVIDEO, SDI. Ect. But when going straight firewire it dose not matter.

Hope this make sence I'm a little drunk right now. sorry

Hey thanks! Have a beer on me....I am glad to hear that there is an inexpensive alterative. Any model numbers you recommend? I ask this because in another thread a poster mentioned that the Panasonic models kept the timecode intact. Thanks again for yur quick reply.

Well really any known brand mini dv camera would work Sony,Panasonic,JVC Time code that is used off the dvx is just a reprensentation of the time recorded to tape. So on the DVX if it says you have TC:00.00.24.13 then on any other camera it would be TC:00.00.24.13 it dose not matter. Reacently I had to log and capture a bunch of footage like 40 tapes or so for and extreme 4x4 that I am doing. So to speed up time I had 3 guys all with different decks on had a JVC on had a Panasonic ect. Any way they would watch the footage and write down the time code on the really cool stuff.I would take that tape with the list of time codes they had written down and pop it into my deck and log all the clips in FCP and batch capture them. What I am saying is using all these different brands didn't matter one bit. TC is TC

And thanks for the beer

I'm not sure that's totally accurate. I've read in a couple of threads that the new Panasonic GS line of camcorders won't read the TC from the DVX. People with the older DV line seem to have no problems. As for other brands, it seems to vary - some will and some won't. They can all transfer the footage through firewire but not all can transfer the timecode along with it. I'm also in the market for a cheap camcorder "deck." I guess I'm going to have to go to Best Buy with a DVX tape and figure out which ones will play it and which won't.

Well then I stand corrected sorry guys. Like I said everything I have used has always worked. But good luck and fuboy I think taking a tape to best buy is a good idea. It is better to be right then have to reaturn a 300 dollar camera.
