Alternate to Firewire

I know the alternative to a broken firewire port for capturing is getting a cheapo minidv and use that as a deck, but I was wondering if anyone knew about the Elgato Video Capture for mac http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815131011&cm_re=elgato-_-15-131-011-_-Product found here. Would it be wise to get this? Cuz I mean I could use it to upload old school tapes for my parents, but I'm afraid it won't be the same quality.

I have a feeling the answer I'm going to get is "fork over a few more bucks and get a cheapo cam to use as a deck"

I just had to make sure!

thanks!

Yes, by going Digital-Analog-Digital, the quality will suffer. It is however difficult to say whether the loss of quality will be acceptable for you - this really depends on you.

I would get a second camcorder. An used one on eBay shouldn't be that much more expensive...

I would say a cheap mini dv camera. My video teacher just got a new one for my TV production class. $220 Canon ZR 950. Nice camera as a double too if you ever need a small camera.

I think most people here will recommend that you do not use your DVX as a capture device to begin with.

Use a DV device as your "deck." I use an older Sony DCR-TRV17 whose tape mechanism is barely used due to recording to Memory Stick.
