Already own GH2; keep my 7d + Tokina 11-16mm, or get another GH2?

Hey folks,

Was wondering if I should keep my 7D/Tokina 11-16mm setup, or unload and get another GH2. I already own a good set of lenses (fast Nikon AIS), rigging, tripod, monitor, audio, etc, so only the body is of concern.

The reason I haven't done so far is the ability to go ultra-wide with the above setup, which is limited on the GH2 due to lens availability and crop factor.

Some reasons I think I should are:

1) Recent hack developments, not to mention overall quality even without
2) Standard of color, "look and feel"
3) Standard of equipment/accessories
4) Lack of custom firmware on the 7d

I'm not a stills shooter, so video would be my only concern.

Thanks (although typing this out makes me feel as if I've answered my own question, hah!)

Haha, you did, it seems you just need some more confirmation. If it's for video only, it should be a no brainer, I'm just not sure if you find a proper solution to get that wide on the GH2.

my biggest concern would be a wide lens. I know shooting on a t2i and occasionally a GH2 i find that its hard to get the wide shots i want with the GH2 because of its crop factor. So with that 11-16mm you have a great wide lens on that 7d. do you find yourself shooting in tight places often? you may find that you need that width for indoors type of stuff.

If it's video only - GH2. 7D is a great camera, but it's more of a compromise on the video side

easy peasy, get rid of your 7d for starters. And you can just keep your 11-16mm which is a magnificent lens and use it on your gh2. Yes you lose a little on the wide side, it will become a 22mm-32mm lens, but 22mm is seriously wide. You should be able to cover 95% of scenarios with sth as wide as 22mm. If you are positive you absolutley need sth wider than 22mm, then you can get the pricey 7-14mm, or sth like the samyang 8mm 3.5 maybe. Or you can put a quality wide angle adapter(don't laugh, it works pretty well) on the 20mm pancake. Also, how useful is having such a wide on a 7d, which will exhibit all the shortcomings in all their glory like aliasing, lack of detail, sharpness, moire etc?

Nothing beats a 7d with a Tokina 11-16mm lens. Also a lot of people here are out of their minds if they think these Canons do not provide excellent video quality.

I own the Tokina with a t3i and the GH2 with the 7-14mm. I must say I prefer by far what I get from the GH2 with the 7-14mm.

the Pana is a bit slow but very usable on lowlight at F4 ISO 2400. probable only gripe is the DOF everything stay in focus, with the tokina and the T3i wide open you have some nice bokeh when you get very close to the subject.

Pretty subjective statement. First, noone said Canons don't produce excellent video, but especially on wide shots I'd pick GH2 over any Canon any time. I shot with 7D - Tokina combo at a couple of jobs, it is a good combo but it's not the holy grail.

@OP: owning both cameras, you should be in a better position than most people in these forums to answer that question...

WHY you should KEEP the 7D!

WHY you should KEEP the 7D!

Hey folks,

>>>KEEP THE 7D. Did you see movie "LIKE CRAZY"?? It was just shot on 7D. Won Sundance. Sold for 4 million to PARAMOUNT...and is the front runner for the Academy Awards. NO OTHER SLR in the world has done this!! I know, I know...it's all about story. The 7D is weatherproof, it is stronger to support a custom PL mount (the new models of 5D and 7D will have PL mount options)...and 7D is 1.6 which performs better up to 35mm. So keep your 7D, 11-16, and rent the new CANON EF mount 14-60, 30-300, 24, 50, 85mm cinema lenses that just came out if you have budget and are filming. If not get the NEW version of 24-70L 2.8f and ROKINON 85mm 1.4 combined with your 7D is a great package for filming music videos, commercials, short films etc. :cheesy:

lol...dude said "no other SLR in the world has done this". Im sure if it was shot on RED or ALexa it would have done it all the same :) im sure its just point blank a good film.

Ha ha...no other SLR? That's one creative SLR...wow.. I'm lazy....so...I want one of those. :-) Wait...I had one. RATS!!

the Pana is a bit slow but very usable on lowlight at F4 ISO 2400.

I read a lot of comments like these, and I would like to know what am I doing wrong because I find all ISO settings above 800 pretty useless, even on a 5D the image ends with noise that is simply unacceptable when you strive for quality pictures.

I am currently filming a DOC with large pieces of abandoned industrial indoors with a 5D, and the sets are being lit with HMIs when the shots cannot be record at ISO640 or lower because of the higher ISO digital noise.

I also have the 7D, Tokina 11-16 and GH2, and there's nothing else for m43 that can match the ultra-wide, low-light ability of the 7D + 11-16/2.8.

So the big question is - how important is that to you? Selling the 7D for a T3i or T2i instead would be a good idea if ultra-wide/low-light is a requirement, just think of it as a specialty piece of equipment like a POV cam. How often is a 11mm shot @ f2.8 the "money" shot?

On the other hand, would the SLR-Magic 12/1.6 or Olympus 12/2 be wide enough? You would gain 1 to 2 stops but lose about 30% of the ultra-wide. You would also gain some standardization in your equipment.

+1. Why are you asking strangers to pick which camera you should use? You already have both tools in front of you, and nobody knows your shooting scenario better than you.

For what it's worth I keep both Panasonic and Canon cameras in my kit, as they each have their own pluses and minuses. Select the right tool for the job!

All the Best!
