Almost new DVX owner...few questions...

I'm a student right now badly wanting equipment of my own to play with and just to learn on. I'm pretty tight moneywise and have gone back and forth of whether to go with a consumer HD or SD DVX. I've decided to go with a used DVX and in a few months add on a 35mm adapter. So I'm pretty much using this for indie shorts, and whatever work I can pick up (small scale).

I got a few questions.

1) I've decided to buy used knowing that I'm probably only gonna be using this for a year or so before I upgrade to HD. On ebay the DVX100a is going for around $1000. The DVX100b is going for $1500ish+. Is tossing another $500 for the 'b' worth it? Or is the money better spent on a good tripod or mic? Does a lens adapter work better on either one?

2) How many hours used is considered 'good'?

3) I've really liked the test footage I've seen on some of the lens adapters so far. My one questions is how does it IMPROVE the quality of the image? Or does it? Obviously the DOF is the big difference. But if you arn't taking the dvxlens off, then how is the image looking better?

Any other advice would be great. Thanks.

1. 100a is elder model, LCD is over scan (can't see the safety area margin), 100b LCD under scan (can see the safety area margin), 100a can support professional headphone for sound monitoring, 100b cannot, only can use earpiece. 100a color is a bit heavy, 100b color is slightly natural. my opinion is advice u to safe the usd500 for other tripod or mic.

2. just a film looking, using 24 or 25 p, but it still a DV, frame size only 720x576 PAL, 720x480 NTSC.

Hope can help.

concerning adapters... that's pretty much it... you are getting the 35mm 'ish DOF and FOV. Other than that, there are actually compromises that you make when using an adapter (there is always a tradeoff)... In this case, the hits would be in light efficiency, and overall rez of the image...

Hopefully someone else will answer your question as to the number of hours to be looking at... But, I would say a lot depends on the care it was given as much as it does the amount of hours... Of course, heads are moving part and they can break over time, so a lower hour is obviously going to be ideal. but, if you can you preferably want someone who stuck with a brand of tape (then you should probably stick wiith that brand as well in general), kept their heads cleaned often, didn't use it as a deck too much, etc.

I don't know where you heard this but you are mistaken. They can both be monitored fine with pro headphones, just make sure to match the impedence.
