It depends on whether the "power save" function is enabled. The camera either turns itself off after five minutes (if not recording), or it powers down the tape heads after five minutes. So it would be possible to have it power down the heads but still be turned on for hours and hours.

But it would also be possible for it to not be powering down the heads, right?

If it does power down the heads, does the hour meter continue to increment?

I guess the bottom line is the hour meter really isn't a reliable indication of how much wear the heads have actually had. At best, it can only tell us the maximum amount of wear the heads could have had. The owner of the camera can then tell us anything he wants as far as the "actual" head use. (I'm not saying twocik23 was doing that by any means. Just that it could happen in the future to anyone buying a used DVX.)

Just shot 15 mins of test footage and had the camera on for about 1 hour and the internal clock is now at 127. To answer your question yes it goes by how long the camera is on.

It occurs to me that since the clock only reflects whole hours -- not minutes -- then you could possibly have had 126 hours and 46 minutes on the clock before you shot your 15 minutes of footage. This would account for the clock appearing to increment a full hour.

It just seems odd to me to have an hour meter that gives you relatively useless information. I don't care how long a DVX has been turned on -- I care how many hours (or feet) of tape has passed over the heads, resulting in wear on the tape heads. If the hour meter doesn't give me that information, then what good is it?

Not trying to hijack your thread. This is just a very interesting line of discussion to me. Thanks for your patience.
