Almost a car hit

Hey just a quick question/reality check for you guys.

I am looking to do a shot of a car driving down the road (int) you see a ball roll out of a yard in front of the car and than a kid running out after it. The car slams on the breaks and the next shot is the kid standing in front of the stopped car staring at the driver and the driver staring back.

I am thinking the best (realistic) way of doing this would just to shoot it in reverse? agreed? or actually thinking about it...is there really anything to shoot in reverse...guess doing a split screen would also work.

Thanks,
swim

No need for the kid and the car to be anywhere near each other until the final shot.

1. Ball rolling into street, Kid running after ball
2. Same, thru windshield from a distance
3. Kid picks up ball, wide-eyed at the on-coming car
4. Driver of car panic-braking
5. Kid and Driver staring (as in original post).

I'd go with the split screen. That way you can show the car slam on the breaks and get incredibly close to the kid without risking any danger.

do a whole shoot with the kid losing his ball, chasing it into the street, and the last shot low, static, tripod shot with the kid stopping in the street staring at nothing as if a car was there. Do not move the camera. Then shoot the car stopping with no kid there. Do a separate set of shots of the car speeding down the road. Cut the two scenes back and forth then split screen the last shot. No danger to anyone.

Thank you.

I like simplicity. Besides, everyone and their brother has seen that scene a hundred times already...you just have to hint at it and they'll fill in the blanks themselves. No need to drive yourself crazy trying anything fancy.

Have you thought of doing a long lens shot? Get way back and zoom in all the way. Have the driver slam on his brakes 20 feet from the kid. The long lens will hide the distance between them.

Kid with ball.
ball goes away,
kid chases ball.
shot over driver as kid runs to street
long lens shot of car stopping 10 feet away.
two shot of car and kid together, rock car for stop
done.....

i would combine what kdawg and kyle presley reccommend. if its too dangerous of a predicament even using a long lense, then just combine the two elements(kid/car) from two static shots from the long lense as well as any side shot where you would show the bumper getting close. i would definitely use the combination of shots to show the bumper getting close from the side though. shot in reverse the car will not cat as it would if it had just slammed on the brakes.

#1 Find a wig
#2 Trim your kids hair till it matches the wig, or heck find a wig that matches his hair but that is no fun.
#3 Find a dummy same height and build
#4 Have Wardrobe dress the dummy
#5 Prop up the dummy by wire or a sawhorse so dummy is in the street
#6 Have car run over the kid, opps I mean dummy, could do a low to ground shoe shot and slowly goes up and then car slams into dummy.
#7 Add blood pumps & explosions as deemed required.
#8 Have fun
