"All We've Built" 5D3 Short Film Trailer | Camera Review

Hello DVX,

Long time reader, first time poster. I got my preordered 5D Mark III last week and immediately set about shooting a short film with it. I wrote a pretty non-technical review here:

http://www.treelinecreativemedia.com/2012/03/31/all-weve-built-5d-mark-iii-first-impressions/

Basically, I think it's a clear improvement over the 5D Mark II, but it's maybe not everything we'd hoped it could be. Here's a quick trailer for the film I started shooting with it.

Although that link ends in lolz our trailer isn't intentionally funny. If it works better humorously for you, I suppose that works for me.

Thanks for the look!

Footage is so noisy, sorry but I have seen Philip Blooms tests and they don't lok like anything you just showed us, you might need to own ur skills better on the cinematography end, IMO.. but other than that good Job =) no offence

WOW, what a way to welcome a first poster. Nice job.

To the OP. Nice work. Keep it up and stick around. Chin up buddy...

Sure, there's some noisy shots and the video is poorly compressed, but I definitely wouldn't go as far as 'almost unwatchable'. Personally, I liked the lighting and editing/pacing of the shots. Looking forward to seeing the final product!

Ruben, Don't make me. Please.
You made a critique uncalled for to a first time poster based on a internet upload compressed to hell. Then told him to own his cinematography skills. How do you know this is not a 16 year old kid, excited to share his work. THe basic fact is Thomas has some nice shots in that clip. The one on the road is a very nice shot among others.
Why not ask, "why does the compression seem off", or "you have some nice shots there but I'm concerned about how you exported it". Therefore, before understanding any level of his experience, you might be able to help him out.

Because, that is what I see. Nice shots, quickly turned around, but with a question about his output. But the road shot at :10 is BOSS. He's done more than I have with his Mk3 and I've had it longer.

Ruben - the footage is pretty noisy in some places.. I shot intentionally at really high ISO's because I wanted to see what these new ISO settings looked like. I kicked out this trailer using the stock Vimeo compression setting in Premiere and should have put more time in setting the compression up on export. I don't think it would surprise anyone for me to say I'm not really trying to compete with Philip Bloom as far as camera tests go. Thanks for watching and the critique.

Thanks for the compliments Seven.b and Dusty. I really liked the road shot as well (it was me imaging how excellent a helicopter shot might have been ha). Just some background on myself I'm soon to be college grad at Indiana University. I currently do freelance work for a bunch of places in Indiana and last summer I interned at the White House working with the President's video team. So I'm just getting started professionally, but I don't think of myself as being super experienced.

I'm gonna try to replace my vimeo version of the video with a new export. Too be honest I haven't spent nearly enough time learning about how export settings effect the final product! Thanks again for the comments.

Welcome to the forums Thomas. There are those here that will help you, and those that will set you off. All sorts of good advice here at DVXuser. And if you don't see it, ask and someone will explain. It's why I come here, to learn and discuss.

I hate people that insult someone, then say "no offense" As if the insult just goes away. To tell someone that their footage is almost unwatchable is not only rude, but it's uncalled for. Especially since it wasn't unwatchable.

So can you post up some of your work so we can see what "watchable" footage is suppose to look like. Oh, and please post your newest 5d3 footage. I just want to see for myself how you were able to get the best out of a two week old camera. I'm sure other members would find it useful as well.

In the future, try a little harder to give an opinion without bashing the "first" time poster.

Well I liked it - the road shot was great and Id say a better choice than an aerial POV which would in effect remove the watcher from the story - the road / drivers POV draws you in. Might not hurt to check on the compression but end of the day, tell me the name of a post apocalyptic movie with squeaky clean noiseless visuals and Ill be putting it straight onto my 'do not watch' list ;-)

I totally agree! I think my issue with this compression has more to do with the gross blocking that occurs, but I love the noise on the Mark III. With the sharpening in post I think it has a really filmic look. I'm probably in minority, but I love films with some visible noise. I felt the Mark II's noise wasn't really appealing at all and I feel like the Mark III is really improved in that area.
