all new to me WB and scene settings

I have just purchased a DVX and have come from the dreaded 1 chip camcorder (Canon ZR) editing with imovie and am trying to use my DVX with FCP. I understand the basic principals are still the same but WOW I can do allot more now. Anyway what I am confused about is 2 things. 1) How do I white balance the DVX as I have read the manual and the dvx users book that came with the promo but I must be doing something wrong as the image does not seam better. 2) When I set up a user setting in the scene settings how do I save it to a user button? -Thank you for your help this site is a goldmine of knowledge....

I just learnt this recently!:

1. There is a button on the front of the camera called "awb" (auto white balance). What i do is get to the location and set up the camera ready to take the shot of what i want, sunlight makes anything white look blue, so what you have to do is tell the camera what colour is white. You do this by getting a white piece of paper and put it just in front of the subject you are filming then zoom into it so it takes up 80% of the screen then press the "awb" button, it should go from blue to white and the camera is white balanced.!

You say the image doesnt seem better?, there could be a number of reasons, here are some awb problems i have experienced in the last month: -
a) the awb says error: ng level over, you need to ajust the iris to let in less light or the white balance wont work,
b) there may be an influence of sunlight and studio type lights, basically sunlight is blue and the other lights are orange, and you cant whitebalance its just impossible, there are ways aroudn it though, turn off the orange lights (since you cant really turn off the sun) or you could put a blue gel (plasitc type sheet, not hair gel!) on the front of the orange light so both light influences are blue and it can be white balanced.
c) poor lighting gives poor image.
d) the image looks crap if you are shooting someone inside and there is a window behind them. the window goes white and they go black!

its hard to tell exactly whats wrong, how doesnt it seem better? more details would help me (or someone with more experence) explain whats wrong.

2.
menu
sw mode
user 1
then keep clicking the pause button to change what it does.

i dont really understand user settings....

Thanks I will try that on the WB, It has always seemed like I get the white balance blue but what you said with the cam always thinking the sunlight is blue is true so I will try again. In regards to the scene settings I will try that as well as I am never able to asign where I want my saved settings to go and and retrieve them when I power up again. Thanks

Wow that worked great for the WB. So simple...... Still cant get the scene files to get assigned to a user button and saved.

Thank

User button and scene fiels are 2 different things.

There are two user buttons that are shortcuts.
SW Mode -> User 1 -> Yes
Select color bars, backlight, white fade, etc
Use Menu button to step back up out of menus.
You shoudl see User 1 now displaying the new setting you have set.

Scene files relate to the dial on the back on the camera. F1-F6
These come in preset for but you may change them as you wish.
Select one of the scene fiels with the dial such as F3: Spark
Go to Scene File and make any changes you want. Gamma, Colro response, detail level, FPS, etc.
At the bottom you can name it.
Now go to last item Save/init. You'll be asked to confirm.
Once done whenever you go to that setting on the camera (F3 in this case) it will use those settings. This allows you to have 24PA in all filemodes but with different gamma or detail settings if you wish.
By using Init you can restore the defaults.
