ALL-I vs. IPB: IPB Wins.

ALL-I vs. IPB. See my comments here: http://cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=39999. In short, ALL-I is noisy and has a macroblock quantization issue. IPB at ~30Mbps smokes 80+Mbps ALL-I. Lower noise and much higher detail while using ~3x less disk space:
ALL-I (see tree, left of sign, bamboo, right of sign, sign pole):

Recommended settings:

IPB, Faithful, 0,0,0,0, Manual White Balance. Sharpen in post with "Sharpen" (convolution, real-time in PPro) or Unsharp Mask with radius < 1.0 (typically slower and not real-time). Use larger values for Unsharp Mask for mid frequencies, and really large values (50+) for Local Contrast Enhancement: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/contrast-enhancement.shtml.

For Pro Audio:
Set audio level to manual, set level to 1 click above 0. Use any decent preamp to bring levels up to -12dB. I tested with a G3 wireless receiver straight into camera as well as a Sound Devices USBPre2 (with a USB battery- excellent location quality for less $$$ vs. an SD702, as long as the camera is on a tripod, not moving).

Hi everybody...
ok, so 8 months later, what's the verdict? All-I or IPB?

Any new thoughts or discoveries?

All-i for me too. Motion is significantly better, less compression artifacts. More noise. Way better shadow detail.

these guys are going on about the compression compromisong quality and other factorsignored like use of ALL i for professional reasons to do with sync/time code, 90mbs for broadcast and higher color count, for greenscreen shoots ALL-i is the only way to go or get a ninja 2,

they are all welcome to correct me though but i read the thread and it is like a Jpeg versus RAW thread, all depends on the use of ALLi or RAW, usually ALL i and RAW photos are comprosed by people who do not have large enough memory cards,

Yea, I find myself shooting ALL-I only as well.
Not because I don't trust IPB, but because it just "feels" right to go ALL-I.

Same way I feel about all American muscle cars. Yea, a twin turbo Honda Civic may be faster and even more efficient and all that, but I'd rather pull up in the '72 Corvette.

I feel like IPB over saturates and breaks up quicker than an ALL-I workflow.
It seems that IPB has more difficulty with secondary colors than ALL-I.

However, this is based more on usage in the field than scientific observations.

is all-i easy to edit? does it mean that one can edit footage shot with all-i with an average computer like core2duo, considering one edits in edius 6?

let me see if i still have the old edius 5 installed.
I remember i use to edit avhcd file from my Panasonic camera now that codec is cpu hungry and my old pc with eidus had no problem play back and shuttle. Only if you encode it will be in real time.
So all I should be esier on your pc.

If you want i can give you a clip for you to try if you have a drop box?
