Hey there, I was wondering if anyone knew of an all electric generator or large rechargeable battery that I could use to power a light/fog machine/etc when on set in the middle of nowhere. Thanks.
I know that there are battery packs that will allow you to plug directly in and have power but a fog machine itself can be 1000 watts. The only other thing I can think of is a deep cycle car battery and a super heavy duty inverter (think 2-3k watts) and even then, I'd imagine you'd drain that pretty fast.
Alternative would be to wire an inverter up to your car and KEEP THE CAR RUNNING or you'll end up stranded.
The only other option would be a generator rental. $150/ day would get you the genny and enough fuel to keep it running for a day.
Yeah, renting generators tend to be less than that. See how much you need, but renting a generator here in Sweden (where everything is expensive) it's about $90 for 2KW Honda. We had a 2.8KW and we had an 1,2K HMI, some kinos and a fog machine running for major parts of the day (plus microwave ovens and coffee machines for lunch) and the gas was only about $10.
Grab a genny...
The only other option is buying/borrowing a few car batteries and running 1-2 1000watt inverters off them.
So cost wise, a genny is the better solution.
However, if you only need a few hours of electricity then maybe a car battery is an easy solution... the inverters cut off when the battery gets low, so you can still start your car up... but to be safe, i'd have the car running at least for half your usage off the inverter.
If you are in the DIY mood, you can head over to Ballard or Horizon and query them about their hydrogen fuel cell stacks or generator options. Not sure where you will get compressed hydrogen from though. But they should be the most quiet solution, next to batteries.
