SHORT: All Children have the Right to Art

I had an image of New Zealand as a bright, colourful magical place - but the overal look of the short was a bit depressing. The ending especially after the credits - as the upbeat section, that girl in nice blue tutu was dull and grey? The previous dance studio instead of being bright and vibrant was dull and grey too? Strange choice. Good subject and one I fully support but the acting was terrible. If you use amateurs you get amateur performing, which in a video designed to promote the arts is a mistake - it makes people wonder if arts training is really worth it if the advert, justifying it as valuable, is not top notch?

I realise the difficulty, but it's like saying singing is so important to development and instead of hearing somebody singing wonderfully, you get somebody from row two of the local am drams.

You need them to see something to aspire to, and the the unforgivable error of using a violin clip where the player cannot use their fingers really made me laugh! Surely you could have found somebody who could actually play the damn thing? As for the people painting with no paint on the brushes and a technique that would work great on a plain wall in a house? If you want top promote arts, actually get people who can do these things or else you are just as guilty as those who don't appreciate arts education.

Sorry - but I've been involved in Arts Education since 94 and while the idea is great for this video, it actually devalues arts by not using people who people can aspire to?

I'm sure your intention was sound, and you just didn't realise how cringeworthy a violinist, painter or trained dancer would find some of the content.

Ironically, I left youtube playing and the next video that came up was this one https://youtu.be/-EjfGgvsldM No contest in quality - and these young people show clearly why arts is to be supported.

thanks for your feedback good or bad :-) I will be sure to pass it on. We were filming another project and had a few down days so I decided to shoot this (no real good excuse). We did it in 7 hours which isn't bad due to the rush.

I do agree with you the acting was so so - the girls are dancers not actors. The funny thing about you saying we need trained dancers is - these six dancers are award winning dancers from New Zealand and they have competed against USA and Aussie winning awards and if these girls are bad then it says that USA and Aussie are worst :-) I myself is not a dancer so I am very clueless on what I'm watching.

As for the location it was the only place to grab in a short time and I don't know dance studios so it look great to me so I had no issues :-)

As for the painters and violinist/cello players that was set up quickly by a friend of mine and I would have done it a bit different myself if given the time. The kids playing the instruments I think were just beginners because the sound they produce were not kind to my ears. BUT on the flip side we did receive a huge amount of positive feedback which was nice for the talents to hear.

Due to how many great feedback we have gotten from it has already put this project into a discussion about re-doing it on a much higher level - casting. crew and location.

And again thanks for your honest opinion which is good to have otherwise one may not see their own mistakes and find ways to fix it.

I do have to share a great review :-)

Loved the short film. Felt like the message was very clear. It is sad some kids don't get the opportunity to do things and are treated like they don't have a dream themselves. Children have such beauty in their hearts for passion, and that passion should be fed. All children have that right . Thank you for sharing. The dancers are beautiful and did a great job. They dance like nobody is watching and if the steps are written on their soul and the steps pour out of their feet. If we could just give them all a chance that would be so lovely. ❤
