All aboard the HDV train...My 2 Cents

Well....High Definition has been stirring like a wall of water for some time now. With the new affordable equipment pricing, the explosion of digital channels and revolution of reality TV the opportunities are great for the creative people like us!!!

HDV and soon HD(less compressed) has positioned us like surfers in the water getting ready to mount up and ride the wave.

As far as I am concerned all of the latest HDV cameras are great and if used creatively could get you closer to your media, television and film needs.

All these cams have DV mode if you still need that format. the imaging is much better than the average DV cam and some rivaling broadcasting cams.

Yes HDV has its weakness primarily fast motion tracking but if you are innovative you can produce around this and make money which is usually the goal. Or create movies that can be blown up nicely until a large screen.

Also bear in mind that all of these cams have a analog uncompressed HD output. Whichmean as capture technology becomes available and cheaper you can modify your HDV cam with a full (less compressed) solution.

The Sony FX1 being the cheapest of the prosummer bunch lacking only xlr inputs and individual volume control is in the price range of the DVX100a last year. I have rented this cam and for the money it is great. You could produce some serious projects with this cam.
At this price range I wouldn't purchase any regular DV cam.

The JVC HD100 offers interchangeable lenses and shoulder mount form factor. I love this cam.

The Canon XLH1 offers multi cam remote features which make running your own TV studio a one man show.

The Panasonic HVX200 offers probably the best imaging available under 10 grand with a DTR direct to ram Less compressed format than HDV.

If you are in the market for a cam don't even bother with anything that is not HD (sorry guys) including the DVX100b. HDV/HD is one of those things that once your into it you can't go back. Projects that I loved before I can't even look at anymore.

The arguments that I hear against buying one these HD cams is that nobody can play HD yet and it will be a few years until the masses do. Well there are few companies that make affordable HD players using a free codec WMVHD by Microsoft which utilizes the same bandwidth of a standard .25 cent DVD. This means that you don't have to buy an bleeding edge technology expensive Blu ray or HD-DVD player or burner. This format plays on a decent computer.

A regular DVD player can be modified with this codec and maybe a better video card and viola you have a HD player. Probably not as good as a Blu ray device but definitely much better than current DVD standards.

Jvc HDplayer please note the price of $399.00

Bang for the buck is what the masses grab for just look at the success of MP3 players. When you can offer HD imaging for $399.00 HD is here.

Don't buy into the past HDV will get you over the hump until recording less compressed HD becomes feasible. Make money and build your company/ideas and buy into that better technology 3-5 years from now when Blu ray can disply it and HD DTE/DTR (direct to disk) is ready and affordable and buy into that with your profits.

So if your on the HDV fence, jump in the water is fine.

This time next year, we will all be here again debating over the HVX400!! :O

(am just Kidding)

Yea new tech is good thing, my personal feeling is that HD means that the cameras have to work harder (because people expect much more from them) , that drives up the performance of these camares (a very good thing)

I've seen the AVEL player, play DivX 6's HD and it was terrific. I then made my own 720p DivX HD file and put it on a DVD -R. I used the DivX High Definition profile to create a file and it played. Very slick.. and CHEAP!

You're right, once you start editing and working in higher resolution, you can't go back to SD. It's very difficult.
