Aliasing/twittering EX1

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone has figured out a solution to minimize aliasing/twittering with the EX1?

I thought aliasing was less when working with Progressive, although there seems no discernible difference with either one. It is really noticeable when filming tower blocks.

I guess there must be a way to minimalise this effect as I rarely notice it on TV.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I had the same problem which i managed to get rid of by turning detail off and making sure my image wasnt over exposed. I remember alot of the time the problem wasn't even with the image rather than the image my montiroing solution was incorrectly outputting.

Thanks. I will try this. I am still getting blury, murky images, even when using the http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/ex1_sd_output_young.html workflow. I'm not sure where the problem is arising as I have tried this technique 'Export from your timeline into ProRes HQ at 720x480 16:9. Then drop that into Compressor for an SD DVD. Do the downconvert and transcode first in FCP and then Compressor just has to make the SD MPEG-2 file' (http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/142/862811) - although when I drop the finished MPEG-2 into DVD pro, i doesn't support the format, but does allow me to burn the SD DVD - but with again, murky results.

Not sure why your getting these results but ive made quite a few sd dvds now and have continually been impressed. All i do is:

shoot 1080p/25fps/shutter 50/custom pp with detail off

edit on a 1080p timeline in fcp then export to a native self contained master/ movie

open it in compressor, add the highest quality 90 min dvd preset, then activate the 'frame controls' and select best for resize filter, deinterlace and and rate conversion'

then take the outputted files and drag them into dvd studio pro and burn, and then i have a nice looking dvd. However of course if i were to watch it on a hdtv with a dvd connected via scart lead or some other standard def connection then the quality will look a lot less stella (as expected).

Daniel, I'm confused by one small part of your workflow. You say "....for resize filter, deinterlace and..." Deinterlace? I thought this footage was Progressive to begin with. Where did Interlacing get into this workflow in the first place? I'm confused.

I haven't tried this work flow yet, but it sounds interesting.

Edit as normal in HD in FCP
Choose File>Export to XDCAM. This will create a BAPV folder with your project in it.
Launch XDCAM EX Clip Browser and open the BAPV folder
Choose File>Export>Raw DV
Use the newly created DV file to create your DVD using standard DVD software.

I've had surprisingly good results (actually some of the best) using the XDCAM EX Clip Browser to export HD into SD (DV) footage. Works great. You can also export into other formats if you don't mind the stupid Main Concepts watermark. I'm converting 45 clips to WMV files right now as I type this. Going to upload them to an FTP site so the client can view them. (they aren't going to care about the Main Concept logo)

Don't forget to click on the Details button to choose whether you want "edge-crop" or "letter-box", etc...

Yeh i know it bares no sence at all, i just got used to selecting 'best' for everything even when not applicable, its just a habbit but thought i should tell u exactly what i was doing.

Hey Mitch, if you use premiere pro, you have a suggestion for a maximum tow in standard DVD PAL, direct export of adobe, have a conversion before editing in PP? Thanks

Sorry, but I've never used Premiere. I only Adobe After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop and Bridge. What's "maximum tow"?

Thanks for this, but when I edit in HD and try to export to XDCAM, it tells me the current sequence settings are not supported. FCP decided on the sequence settings for me when I imported the clip, so why it is saying this I don't know.

When I get beyond this hurdle, are you using the 'current settings' and are you selecting Anamorphic 16:9?

Daniel, when you say you export as a master QT - are you exporting as quick time and leaving the settings to 'current settings'?

Also, I have turned off detail, but still get a bit (although a lot less) aliasing - I think i will try the flicker reduce function too and see how that pans out.
