Alert! Metabones c-mount adapter gets stuck in AF100 mount

I just wanted to tell everyone of my experience with the metabones c-mount to M4/3 adapter because it scared the you know what right out of me. The adapter itself is a nice piece of engineering and is of much better build quality than the $15 rainbow imaging adapter and others like it you find on eBay. The moment the adapter arrived from China, I attached my Canon 25-100mm c-mount lens and put the lens on my AF100. It seemed to go on a bit stiff, but it clicked into position nicely and I had no black screen problem when I fired up the camera as has been the case with some other adapters. The mount was solid and did not move on the camera. I was very happy to see that I could now achieve infinity focus through the entire zoom range with the metabones - something I was not able to do with the cheaper adapters. My excitement was short lived and my heart sank into my stomach, however, when I tried to remove the lens from the camera and the adapter would not budge. I mean, it was like it was cemented in place and wouldn't turn at all, no matter how hard I squeezed it with my fingers and tried to turn it. The lens, being a c-mount, started to unscrew from the adapter right away as I attempted to remove the metabones from my AF100. So, I took off the lens altogether at that point and decided to focus on getting the adapter off of my camera. Much to my horror, it just wouldn't move. I tried pliers, but the adapter was just too wide and thin to get a good grip on. So, with great care, I had no choice but to bang the adapter off of the camera using a screwdriver and hammer! I stuck the screwdriver into the little "u" shaped indent in the top of the adapter and tapped with the hammer while holding down the lens release button. Thankfully, the adapter loosened with each good tap of the hammer until it finally was loose enough to get off. A truly awful way to dismount an adapter, but it was my only choice unless I wanted to be limited forever more to c-mount lenses on my AF100.

Anyway, I am curious if anyone else has had this problem with the metabones c-mount adapter. If not, what on earth am I doing wrong? I mounted the adapter on its own without any lens and it did the same thing. Maybe I got a defective piece? I'm positive the adapter was lined up flush with the camera each time I put it on, but it just gets stuck on the camera every time.

Be VERY careful. Another user had a tight adapter that ended up ripping out some of the lens connectors. I would contact the adapter manufacturer and tell them it's too tight. Maybe they have a bit too wide of tolerance variation in their manufacturing process.

sorry to hear that. Metabones is regarded to be one of the more solid builds for C Mount - m4/3. Someone else with a GF1 reported the same adapter to fit very tightly as well.

I ordered the Hawks_Factory C Mount - m4/3 that should be coming in any day. I haven't heard any complaints (yet) about that brand—and I hope the fit isn't insanely tight as what's being reported with Metabones.

I think that your experience contradicts your statement. If it works as you described, it is NOT well engineered!

All the best, my friend.

You are absolutely correct! I guess what I mean by that statement is the adapter is much more solid and downright heavy in comparison to the cheap and flimsy adapters I tried previously. I read that the metabones c-mount was a good one to get, but it certainly is NOT. Thank goodness my camera is OK. Buyer beware!

im confused...i thought c-mount lenses didnt cover the af sensor?

Some will (usually 25mm and up according to what I have read, I have a cheapo 35mm that covers perfectly), but you are using areas of the image circle not intended to be fillmed, so it really depends on the lens as to what kind of IQ you are getting out of them.

Hi, everyone. Here is the latest metabones c-mount adapter update:
I wrote to the eBay seller I purchased the metabones c-mount adapter from and let him know that it was overly tight fitting. I received the following suggestion from the eBay seller instructing me how to "fix" the problem. You've got to check this out. Clearly I am not the first, nor the only person to complain about the insanely tight fit of the metabones adapter. He had pictures illustrating the fix ready to go and here they are:

So, I am supposed to manually file this thing down with a metal file and through trial and error, arrive at a functioning c-mount adapter. Call me old-fashioned, but I don't think a customer should have to make any modifications to a piece of equipment just to make it perform the job it's advertised to do. At the very least, metabones should put a statement on their package that says "metabones, the adapter that goes on and never comes off."

What would you do? Where are the truly professional and reliable c-mount to m4/3 adapters? Suggestions?

No, you're supposed to polish the adapter. Think of it as abrasive detailing :-)

We have the Hawks and it's a good unit.. the Fotodiox one is a piece of poo.

Thats od? I have received my metabones adaptor 4/3 to c-mount and it works incredible perfect smooth and steady, maybe you just got a monday fabricated one, i mean really mine is working great.
Its a simple and nice working device. Now I have ordered just another one , the 4/3 to Nikon , let hope that works out well to :-)

I believe that you're referring to my camera with c-mount adapter. The problem with this one was not that it was to tight. Rather it was missing a screw on the c-mount which stopped it from rotating all the way and breaking some of the contacts. The repair estimate was initially €3500 and later, as a gesture from Panasonic, €2500. Needlessly to say, I skipped on that.

O I see , yes there is a small screw preventing it to turn to far , now I see your problem if that was not there, but the metabones adaptor I have is a more recent one I think course it's a steel crome version.

Something to consider when adapting lenses to M4/3 cameras is how the registration point of the lens compares to the registration point of the camera.
A M4/3 camera has a registration point, or focal flange distance of 20mm. Many well known brand lenses that people adapt to the M4/3 format have a FFD which is longer than the M4/3 standard, like Nikon F at 46.5mm and Canon EF at 44mm, so longer adapters are fashioned to extend our standard 20mm FFD to the proper length to fit each lens. However the C mount has a focal flange distance of only 17.5mm, which is less than the native FFD of the M4/3 at 20mm, so the adapter must be machined with a negative 2.5mm toward the sensor. Maybe it's just me being overly cautious, but I don't use C-Mount lenses on the AF100.

Good Luck!

Dave

Katty,

How did your Metabones Nikon to Micro 4/3 work out? I just ordered one for my Panasonic AF100.
