Alan Ladd Jr. RIP

In my opinion, the last great studio executive, and one of the best period. Championed so many great movies including Star Wars which most likely would not have gotten made without him. When George Lucas showed him the script, he said "Look, it doesn’t make any sense to me whatsoever, but I trust you. Go ahead and make it.". He put his faith in the talent and stuff like that just does not happen anymore. He also produced one of my all time favourite films 'The Right Stuff', which inexplicably bombed but is just great. By all accounts he was a great person as well.

I loved the Right Stuff ... a great film by Phil Kaufman ... great screenplay, great directing, great list of great actors, great cinematography by Caleb Deschanel and a great use of el cheapo special effects ... back when studios still made films, not the live action cartoons ...

Funny thing is I was listening to the Right Stuff soundtrack album this morning while grading rocket footage from a launch yesterday. It seems fitting once every few months to put it on. Followed by Tommy, The Final Cut, and the then some Berlioz to wrap up the morning.

"Without Laddie there would be no Star Wars." --- George Lucas

I had heard of Alan Ladd Jr., and seen him in a behind-the-scenes video about Blade Runner. But now I appreciate him a lot more, after reading the article. Also great to hear that he was a good man. Thanks for sharing!

In addition to producing a ton of other great content, in a three year period (1981-83) his mincro studio The Ladd Company produced The Right Stuff, Outland, and Blade Runner. That certainly left a lasting impression on young me.
