AKG SE 300B phantom power problems?

Well, I've gone through all of the posts I could find while searching for possible problems relating to the AKG SE 300B & possible phantom power problems with not much luck.

I picked up a couple of SE 300B's and want to buy the CK93 Hyper, and possibly the CK98 shotgun, but want to make sure that I won't have phantom power problems with the Wendt X3 mixer/pre or the Fostex FR2 recorder.

Has anyone run into problems using any of these combos?

TIA

The Fostex has a solid phantom power supply. I've used it with a very wide range of mics including the CK63 as well as the other capsules in that series, which I prefer, but not the 93. You can check the Fostex forum. It is an excellent recorder.

I am researching the AKG CK93 as well. I found this info about possible issues with Sound Devices mixers. They say:

With microphones prone to this condition, several things can be done to minimize and/or prevent the condition.

* Engage the high-pass filter.
* Use 48 V phantom even if not required.
* Power the microphone(s) from an external phantom supply.
* Power the mixer from an external, DC power supply.

I would appreciate if anyone could comment on this from experience with the mic and SD mixers. I have a MixPre that I run on AA batteries, and I want to buy the CK93 mic. It looks good, but how does it sound?

I've been using the CK93 for the past few months... I like how it sounds, and the size & weight is very nice on the end of a floppy Gitzo carbon pole. If you like to switch between a hypercardioid & a cardioid, then the CK93 (hyper) CK91 (cardioid) capsules are a great deal... You can switch on the fly depending on the conditions.

I use the CK93 with a Wendt X3 mixer, so I don't know how the MixPre works with the Blue Line Series bodies. The X3 provides full 48v phantom. Sound Devices specs on the MixPre state that it supplies either 15 or 48 volts phantom, so I can't imagine there being a problem.

From your sig it looks like we have very similar mics- I have the NTG-1, NTG-3, AT3032 pair, AT3035 pair, and just recently sold the NT4... I think you'd like the CK93.

been using the ck93 for years now with no issues with any phantom power being from a cameras built in phantom or several different mixers.

The issues with Phantom in the link I provides specifically names Sound Devices mixers. So I'm wondering if anyone has used that brand mixer with the CK93. I have a MixPre.

Yes - I've been using the AKG Blueline hyper (ck93) and shotgun (ck98) mics with the Sound Devices 302 for the past two years or so. Never had any issues with phantom power. I think they are both very good microphones.

Glad to hear it androum! I'll mostly be using it straight into my EX1, but sometimes I use my MixPre. Now I wonder if a Zoom H4 has enough phantom to power the ck93 cleanly. I sometimes go to a client's office to do their VO for ads. Now I use the NT3 that powers itself. I tried an AT4033a in the Zoom, and I got an odd buzz, I figure from too little power.

Anyway - I'm sold on the ck93!

Just shot a low budget feature over the summer with the CK93 and the SD MM-1 preamp and had no issues with the phantom power.

Chadfish - sorry to bring back an old thread but did the ck93 and mixpre work well together?

No. I was persuaded to go with the AT4053b, as it sounds better mostly, but also the CK93 is reported to be too susceptible to humidity. I live in Humboldt, in the humid Pacific NorthWest, so I want a more reliable mic. Also, tthe cool thing about both of these mics is the modular nature of them. The other AKG caps are not too great at all, however all the caps of the AT4053b are great sounding. So with the AKG, the bonus of having the ablity to swap caps is not a bonus. So I'm all about the AT4053b for indoor dialogue, and I highly recommend it.
