AJA Cion discounted 4k, Sale price only $4995

Fact:

Aja dropped the prices of various of their very successful products, including the new Cion, which dropped from 8995$ to 4995$

-Aja Cion is not discontinued, in fact it's still just being shipped for the first time.

-These price drops were simply due to supply and demand, plus the competition that emerged since it's been released.

-The camera shoots 4K to ProRes 444 30p, 4K ProRes 4:2:2 60p, and 2K ProRes internally.

-It's made of extremely durable materials and designed for one man shoulder operation yet with a s35 look.

-The camera is not great in lowlight, it needs fast lenses to shoot at night and get clean results.

-The qouted price is not for a fully functional package, the camera doesn't come with a power solution so it needs a V-Lock battery and a charger, it also has no LCD or EVF to shoot with so it requires either an external monitor or AJA's EVF for it to work, plus AJA's SSDs.

These were facts, now opinions:

The camera outer design is beautiful, it sets on the shoukder comfortably, made of luxurious feeling materials and has a professional heft to it overall. It's a very different design compared to the FS7/C100/URSA,

-They took the approach of getting the pleasing look in-camera and they believe this is a unique prospect about the Cion as it has a distinct Cion look, therefore these looks plus inability to record raw internally sacrifices a stop of latitude compared to the same sensor in other cameras. But from what I've seen so far, although the sensor is the same on many, the Cion has a completely different look and image quality, it's about the sensor optical assembly, the processor, the cooling, the algorithms for FPN and noise reduction, the colour science, and the camera performs better than its peers with the same sensor again perhaps due to different processing. The shadows can be pushed extremely high while on another camera using the same sensor it can even be pushed an inch without showing horrible noise and FPN.

-The reviews out there are extremely contra-indicated, half of them are stating it's a perfect camera with amazing ENG ergonomics that gets shots quick steadily and the other half claiming 8 stops of DR and terrible image and terrible ergonomics.

So before you think about it this is one of the very few camera you sill most definitely have to try out for yourself.

The URSA Mini still is not out yet and nobody has tested it, it might be unable to shoot video, so as of now, it's not in the competition.

The FS7 is the available rival, they''re the same price, but the design is very different so you need to see personally which one you like, the FS7 has a huge advantage in shooting at high ISOs and it can be adapted to more lenses plus the speed booster. But the Cion has a removable mount thus a professional sturdy PL mount as on the F5/F55 plus ability to get a Canon mpunt and work perfectly with no adapter issues. The camera also has the advantage of recording to a higher end codec and one that's much easier to edit with straight of the cards (ProRes). And it can output raw without the need for extention modules just a cable and a recorder which makes it go to 4K 120p. FS7 has a log gamma setting and has 2 stops more of dynamic range,

Choose your poison.

You're right the price is no longer showing as a sale price, it's a permanent drop. You can get the 4k URSA mini for $3k for a similar sensor so the drop makes sense. By the time you dress this camera it's going to be over 10k and definitely not for everyone. Concerning the DVX200 I am very interested in this camera as I do more run and gun type of shoots, waiting for more specs to be revealed especially concerning codec and whether it has 10bit 4:2:2 internally.
