AJ-PCS060 P2 Store Drive

I'm sold on the HVX200 and have my order in. Only issue I have (searched and couldn't find in earlier posts) is transferring P2 card files to a G5 box. The AJ-PCS060 P2 Store Drive looks perfect but info says it only supports (is supported by) Windows 2000 and XP. What are the alternatives if this is true?

Can't say for sure on the P2 Store, but my Mac's read/write to FAT32 formatted HDD's just great. I often do cross platform work and the drives are great for transferring files to Wintel machines (outside of the obvious... Gigabit ethernet). If the P2 Store is formatted FAT32, I don't see why it wouldn't work on a Mac. Perhaps it is formatted NTFS, in which case we (Mac users) are screwed. Hope this helps.

A Mac with OS X can read NTFS but not write to it.

Apart from that, here are two other options:

a) dump your footage directly from the camera via USB2 onto an external hard disc. As drive speed does not matter (you copy but do not record at that point), a 2.5" 120 or 100 GB / 4200 rpm will be fine.

b) Purchase an AJ-PCD 10 which will cost you some 2500 bucks (list) and connect it via USB with your G5. Runs beautifully as demonstated at IBC last week. More info here: http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webap...pId=14595&modelNo=AJ-PCD10&surfModel=AJ-PCD10

I don't understand how people can be sold on a camera that no one has seen, and as Jan admits, isn't even finished yet!

It could still be complete crap.

On a slightly more helpful note, Jan has said that Apple are working towards solving issues with P2 cards. I should think that given the time since the HVX's announcement, they'd have plenty of time to make sure it is sorted by the time the camera arrives. I waiting for an Apple update on the situation.

AJ-PCD10- my only question why not firewire? For the money and level of product purpose it seems odd. Or a triple interface for wider situation use.

Can you dump footage directly from the camera via Firewire to an external Firewire drive (lacie, G Tech)?

I think Jan said yesterday that the USB was for dumping the footage (data) to a computer or drive, and that would be "faster than realtime." But with firewire, it would be a "play out" to get the footage. (realtime).

Can anyone validate or refute this?

Thanks,

that is correct. the firewire doesnt do data transfer in the IT domain. it does it in a video data stream format. so the fastest you can get anything out via firewire is realtime. the fastest you can tranfer via the usb2.0 slot is the fastest speed of the slowest component involved in the data transfer.. P2 is 640 mbps Usb2.0 is 480mbps so P2 is faster than the port. so the fastest you could possibly go (whether sustained or not) assuming your drive or device attached can do 480 mbps would be 480mbps wich is 4.8x reatime seeing as DVCPRO HD is 100 mbps. but if your in 720p using 24p if would be more like 12x realtime since its only 40mbps.

Not sure. At the big introduction way back at the Apple event, they mentioned both AVC and SBP2 control over firewire -- that would imply direct drive control over firewire. But that was five or six months ago as well, so I don't know the current status, nor do I know that they ever specifically said that it would be able to control a firewire drive. I think they've said "firewire for streaming, USB2 for drive control."

From Panasonic:

"For quick and easy operation, the AJ-PCS060 simply has a large start button. The drive also includes LED indicators for copy status, drive capacity and battery life remaining. The drive supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems. It runs on DC power, so a user can use a 7.2V DC battery or a 7.9V AC adaptor to power it.

The AJ-PCS060 is available at the suggested list price of $1,800."

I'm unclear why it isn't compatible with OSX given the importance of this product to the workflow and the close editing relationship with Apple...

Jan said yesterday that it was a driver problem with OSX and that the Apple OSX team will be the ones to fix it, whenever that might be.
