one of these is going on ebay at the mo - very put off by the fact is got a "J" at the end. grey import you think??

thanks!

Nah man. I ordered my HVX200a last May from a certified Panasonic reseller, and he kept calling it the "HVX200apj". I am pretty sure that is what it says on my box as well. Should be fine.

thanks for your response! it didnt mention a p2 card in the ad but the seller just emailed to say it comes with a 16gb so im thinking i might go for it.

The fact that the seller didn't mention a $700 item in his auction raises a red flag for me, I have to say. Could you give a link to the auction?

There are a lot of scams on Ebay, you want to be very careful. Even a seller with high feedback can be the victim of a scammer's identity theft and have his acct taken over, so there is no way to prove that a seller is totally trustworthy other than if he gives you his name, address and phone # and you are able to verify the info via an independent source.

ok well i won it - a practically new 200a for $3750. worth it if its genuine. any ideas how to verify before making payment? i wasnt nervous as ive never had a problem on ebay, but am aware it can happen. so now im a touch nervous! appreciate the responses tho.

Hm, lots of red flags. Guy doesn't know much about the item, selling for a "friend." Why couldn't his friend sell it himself? Odd. Also, why is he only selling this one item for his friend? Is this the only quality item his friend owns? Very odd.

Only accepts Paypal. Not bad, but make absolutely sure he is a verified seller.

Also get his ph# and call to make sure it works. Also, check his address in the White Pages and make sure it exists and is to a home, not a post box.

It may be for real, but I'd definitely do some research before I send $. Right now I'd give it a 50-50 chance of being a scam.

ok will do - thanks again. have written asking for phone no. and address etc. there are 2 people on white pages with that name and zip code. hopefully its gonna match up! how do u check if he is a verified seller?

will keep you all posted. and should it turn out to be legit, i will now have reason to start posting on here more!

Feeling brave, are we?

"if it seems too good to be true"...

Some guy selling a recently released camera " brand new" for way below market value would make me mighty nervous. As does his most recent feedback:

"BEST SELLER I'VE EVER WORKED WITH! EVERYTHING PERFECT! THANK YOU SO MUCH! :)"

"DUDE IM SPEACHLESS, BEYOND BELIEF..AMAZING SELLER."

That would be some profuse praise of the sort ordinarily reserved for the dishonest attempting a little too hard to seem spectacularly honest.

Beware.

There are a lot of instances where honest eBayers have had their accounts hijacked by scammers, typically after a period of inactivity by the real seller. The scammer adds a few sales with profuse positive feedback and then sells some BIG TICKET item to a victim. This one is a candidate. I wouldn't buy it, you're buying from a third party with no knowledge of a very expensive item not offering original documentation- either it will turn out to be stolen goods or you will receive a box with a brick in it. Or you'll get REALLY lucky and it will turn out to be totally legit- and it will come with a free flying pig!

"I have here a brand new Panasonic memory card camera-recorder for sale. I don't know too much about it, but you can look up the specs online. I am selling it for my friend who recently lost his home to foreclosure and wants to make some money to get back on his feet. I only opened it to take pictures so you can see that everything is in new condition. He is willing to have the bid start low, so his loss will be your gain. Please, only serious bidders respond. I will only accept PayPal method of payment and will ship only within the United States. Please look at my feedback for you will see that I am a serious ebayer and I don't do bad business. Thanks for looking and happy bidding to you!"

I don't know if this has been pointed out, but there are apparently two HVX-200 boxes in the listing in the photo - unless that is a box within a box type of thing.

Seriously, let us know how this turns out.

i asked about that - apparently it is a box within a box thing. but i guess i could just be being taken for a ride in a giant way right now?!

I have done a lot of ebay transactions and I really don't know about this one. You may have just gotten a great deal or you might be in a precarious situation. The hijacked account is a real possibility. The foreclosure part of the story is a little too much. The shipping cost is very underestimated.

The other thing I was just thinking about was when did the 200A actually ship? The last 60 days? If I had just bought that camera & my house was about to be foreclosed, I would probably see if the place I bought it from would take it back for a credit, etc.

My best advice is what everyone is saying too - call this person on the phone before paying. I think you have maybe seven days before you have to pay. Make sure you are very comfortable with this. $4 grand is a lot to loose.

ok here is the response from the seller:

"Hi, i'm sorry, but you know by looking at my profile that I don't scam anyone. I am also a verified seller through PayPal. I don't feel comfortable giving out my info. You can rest assure that when i do receive payment that you will receive your items as described fully insured so no worries. If you don't feel comfortable we can agree to cancel this and I will relist. Thanks, and I hope you understand!"

Any thoughts? At least I can get out of this with no hassle. Maybe I could just ask for a phone number as opposed to an address?!

Really appreciate everyones help on this.

Effective scammers are going to add touches which enhance their credibility.

It *could * be legitimate, but I would want verifiable copies of the documentation. If it's new, there are receipts. The serial number could be confirmed by Panasonic as well as by the dealer that sold it as to who it belongs to- who you can then contact to be sure they are one and the same. If the documentation is "lost", well...

As an eBay PowerSeller since 1999 I have a lot of insight into what eBay has become; mostly honest folks cohabitating with an increasingly sophisticated den of thieves. It's impossible to know for sure which is which.

Personally, I'm buying my HPX 170 from a legitimate authorized US dealer and I'm glad to pay a little extra for genuine customer service as well as peace of mind. I have found that to be cost effective in the long run.

all very good points - is it conceivable they genuinely wouldnt know to try and get it back to the place they bought it from?? i dunno - im very undecided and $4000 is a hell of a lot of money to lose.

I would bail, immediately. If you loose the money & don't get the camera, you have lost in two ways - no camera & no money. you will still need a camera...

I sold a bunch of things on ebay back in January and had very lengthy phone conversations with the buyers. I had no problem giving them my information, etc and I have been a name fraud victim in the past.

In buying this camera you will need to receive the original sales receipt etc and it doesn't sound like they are wanting to offer that.

Run, don't walk.

He refused to give out his info?!?

DON'T TOUCH IT!!!!

I would contact eBay ASAP and let them know the situation. If you tell eBay customer service that the seller refused to give you personal info on a four figure transaction they will help you cancel the bid without receiving a non paying bidder strike on your account.

ive requested receipt info, where it was purchased from and the serial number. will wait to see whats said but ive resigned myself to the fact this was a bad idea. whoops!
