AG-HPG20 - musing while waiting on a render

While sitting at my desk waiting on a Maya render, I was just reading the specs on the AG-HPG20 and was wondering how recording AVC-Intra might help other cameras as Jan had suggested in another post.

The HPX500 or 170 are easy choices with SDI out; but what about using an HD Component to HD-SDI converter on an HVX200 or even my Sony A1U HDV camcorder? There are times I put all my cameras to work and I especially like to use the A1U on my jib. The picture from the A1U to a Carrion Monitor is really good, but by the time it goes to HDV, the picture has degraded significantly, even just on instant playback to the same monitor.

Would using a product like this http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/259904-REG/AJA_HD10A_HD10A_High_Definition_Converter.html breath new life into cameras that seem to spend more and more time packed away? Same applies to my HVX. It's nice to have three very different camera options and adding the AVC-Intra option to those older cameras sure makes them more compatible in a shoot with the HPX500 (which has a much better picture and capabilities despite any negative comments its been gotten on this board).

Alternately, would using the 1394 output to the AG-HPG20 give the same result? Or would it still be compressed HDV or DVCProHD for example out to the recorder? Or would using an HD component to SDI converter make any difference at all?

Sounds like it's time for testing....

The 1394 input is only for DV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50, and DVCPRO-HD. The HPG20 won't take an HDV feed. And yes, the firewire input would be identical to the recording that the camera would make.

Yes, using a component-to-HD-SDI converter could result in better quality recordings than your onboard HDV recording. But I don't know if the analog component to HD-SDI conversion is going to result in a signal that will take full advantage of what Intra could record; that can only be resolved with some testing.

That's what I figured on the 1394. Looking forward to seeing what can be done with this unit.

Barry, you mentioned Vegas as potentially being capable of editing AVC-Intra material. Any inside knowledge that DVFilm might be developing a Raylight MXF AVC-Intra file decoder ring, er, plug-in?

Did I mention Vegas? I don't recall that, I don't have any way of knowing what they may or may not support... I think it's probably more likely that they could or would develop Intra support because it's based on an open standard. I use EDIUS to edit Intra, it works brilliantly.

I think you brought it up in relation to Vegas now having 32 bit Floating Point support that it might do AVC-Intra (in the future I supposed). Glad to hear Edius is working well with it.

Great footage from Africa, BTW.

Yes there will be an AVC-Intra plugin for Vegas, it will be part of Raylight Ultra
http://dvfilm.com/raylight/ultra

Also Raylight MXFX 2.0, which is coming soon will support AVC-Intra. HPG20 users will probably need it for removing pulldown.

Thanks Marcus, you may have saved me moving to Avid or Edius just yet. Tried to purchase my upgrade to Ultra but not available until tomorrow. I'll assume the AVC-Intra option will be available in an update this year.

We are looking a solution to record the output of our AVS400n switcher. I'm wondering about its usability from an audio standpoint. I'm not sure how the switcher would pass audio onto the HPG20. Our workflow usually encompasses 2 analog audio channels that are mixed upstream of our video switcher. What would be the best way of using an HPG20 in this application?
