AG-DVX200 4K Large-Sensor Handheld Camcorder

With actual deliveries of the cameras still so far away (October?) that would make me reserve my judgement as far as ordering goes. Three months and one IBC are quite a long time in the camera world at the moment......

Other companies don't seem to have quite such a long time between initial announcement and first delivery as Panasonic, and I'm not fully sure where the merits lie. In favour of early announcement are the hope of building up a momentum, and maybe acting as a spoiler on sales of other companies existing products - but the flip side is that it tips the competition off early and gives them time to play a trump by the time product actually hits shelves.

i am in the same situation as you, guy above me, except i am not so eager i will pre order, want hands on reviews (preferably from articulate users rather than websites/magazines as those tend to be overly positive) before i jump.

I um'd and ah'd about the pre-order, but for me I'm in a difficult position. My main camera is failing (random fault on the ex1 where it randomly shuts itself off), I am fortunate enough to have a friend and colleague who is loaning me his ex1 for paid for work for the next couple of months, but I need a replacement camera asap.

The options were, 1 - Fixing my camera, approx £2500 (main board). 2 - Buying a second hand replacement ex1 (approx £1300-£1700 - I tried that and had a faulty ex1 and the seller attempted to blame me for further damage he caused on it's safe return to him - fun - so I had a refund and scrapped that idea). 3 - Spend next to £5k on a new HD only camera for my needs, PXW X200 or similar (but it doesn't make any sense to blow that amount of money on a HD only camera when the same amount or less will get me a 4k option. 4 - DVX200, is the only option that ticks my boxes. To pre-order means first in the queue so I'm not waiting more time using a loan camera, waiting for the second batch to come into dealers.

Man I hope some of that made sense.

cant fault you. i dont shoot super often so ive rented for years. then i ser at tax time what i spent on rentals and see i could have bought a cam, and also taken jobs i passed on because the rental made the budget not worth it.

Heavily graded sample from DP on DVXtour with Pannie in Japan. HD resolution downgraded from cine 4k. Full resolution version to follow when he returns and can post. Claims film like "outstanding" image.

why the sarcasm. Panasonic obviously approved the release of footage.
They may have, they may not have. I'll try to find out. They did authorize release of AF100 footage from a similar event, so it's possible that they authorized this.

In any case, people should keep in mind what the shooter said:
Please do not judge the camera's ability by my footage - this is just a sneak peak. I did not understand the full potential of this camera until after I shot this.

Actually, it'd be good to view his comments in their entirety, which are:

The image quality you will see coming from this camera is without question some of the best I have seen from from a camera in the price range.

The camera has some problems in the pre-release that I hope Panasonic will take into consideration for the final release, Several cinematographers and myself just spent two days in Japan, shooting with and for Panasonic. We all came to similar conclusions about the camera's strength and weakness . If they are able to solve these issues the camera could find and audience. It has much potential for documentaries, sports and event video. I will have more cinema style samples posted soon.

This footage is over graded and down converted to HD it is not meant to dissect only to start a conversation of the possibilities of this camera.

sorry, the tizzy that the other footage allegedly from this cam threw folks into has triggered my snark reflex. the parts i was reacting to were when it said "heavily graded" and "downrezzed". it seems to me (and this has been stated before) that the ONLY thing you can judge quality of original footage by...is uncompressed, ungraded, unprocessed full res footage. even if its only five seconds for file size purposes.

First post (still a DVX100 user!). DR is not impressive (ignoring the heavy handed grading), when he exposes for the face the background sky is completely blown out. Hopefully this is not V-log and he will make clear when he reposts in 4K what he meant by "not using the full capability of the camera". I hope he meant not using V-log. Engineering sample yeah yeah I know. I'm an engineer, the camera is 90% there just to shoot this.

That's true. I now understand why Barry is so cautious about this kind of preproduction footage.

Even if it is V-Log, the opening shot with the lady indoors shooting out to the sky isn't DR that pretty much any camera can handle without properly lighting the indoors. And on top of that, he admitted "over-grading", and that scene seemed overgraded to me.

There were many other shots with impressive DR.

I know this is all pre-prod footage and that video above has compression issues, but I am getting less excited about this camera...I need to stop watching these videos.

It's very strange that footage is interlaced, I don't remember that is possibile shooting interlaced with this camera, more footage coming soon and we will know how this camera real performs.

The editor most likely used an interlaced timeline...which caused the issues...or maybe it was compressed as interlaced, maybe the fields got messed up somewhere, etc.

I was going to say that I'm sure I was seeing interlacing, and pretty bad compression issues. If Panasonic has authorised the release of these clips, it seems strange that there is no measure of quality control on the exports that are filtering down to the public.

I admit I was expecting footage better than GH4, also if it's from preproduction model, I noticed also aliasing at the top of the temple, probably we'll have better footage soon, I believe that Panasonic approved this footage because they advertised Kyoto shooting as important event at their Facebook page.
