Ag-dvc80

The DVC80 was a short-lived product, it was an interlaced-only camera quite similar to the DVX100. It had a lot of the same features, but a lot were missing as well -- I think the DVC80 doesn't have the focus readout, it doesn't have the cinegamma, it doesn't have the 24P or 30P progressive-scan features, etc. Doesn't have the ability to chain to an external firewire device... it was a lower-cost camera. It was only on the market a short time before it was replaced by the DVC30.

I should add -- don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's bad at all -- people who have them seem to really like them. But it's not the same as a DVX, it's missing the features that make a DVX a "DVX" -- the CineGamma and 24P, etc. If all you need is an interlaced 60i camera, there are plenty of owner testimonials to say that the DVC80 is a fine camera indeed.

I'll echo Barry's thoughts: the DVC80's great. It has many of the basic features of the DVX. Cinegamma, 24P and other higher end settings are absent from the unit, as it was designed primarily as an ENG camera. It does, however, chain to an external Firewire device with basic control settings.

I've had my DVC80 for about 18 months, and it has about 260 hours on it. The camera's a solid performer: never had a lick of trouble with it. 60i is about all I need in my line of work, so it was a better solution than the DVX - and at about half the cost. That being said, I'll probably spring for the DVX100B to replace it within the next year, as I can't see getting a smaller chip camera like the DVC30.

Mark,

Be sure to check in with us when it gets close to the time that you'll need your DVX100B. We will be taking pre-orders. We will put together a good deal for you.

I own a couple of these babies and I really like them. I prefer them to the PD-150 (which I also have). They are solid cameras and they pretty much look like the DVX100 without all the 24P and Cinegamma stuff. I am posting 3 videos for you to look at the quality of the video.

The first one is raw...no color correction or anything...straight from the camera using the scene dial to bump up the saturation and crush the blacks.

The second one is same as the first one with the only difference of a diffuser on the lens

The third one is color corrected and has the Magic Bullet filter and also Nattress 60i to 24P conversion filter....just playing around with filters and stuff.

enjoy!

Super8,

Thanks for those three great examples of what the DVC-80 can do. Just goes to show what it can do in the hands of a competent filmmaker like yourself. Those first two interviews looked as though they could be on a Barbara Walter's special. Excellent work! Man!

The third example of the girl's first haircut was really amazing - definitely looked like film - and your use of a moving camera made it look even more like Super 8 - which was a great format (I used it decades ago).

Where do you ge the Nattress conversion filter by the way?

well thanks,

I don't know about the Barbara Walter's look...but I will take it. I strongly believe that it is not the tools but the craft that makes imagery inviting and compelling...gosh I've been saying that forever.

A lot of people get stuck on technology but have no craft or storytelling abilities...hence the work is sub par. My mentor long long time ago could shoot on VHS and make a masterpiece....this is at a time I was shooting on Beta and would put my stuff to shame.

He used to say that you need to learn your camera as if it was an extension on you. Know what makes it purr. I could probably recite word per word all my different camera manuals that I own. I can make the camera respond and shoot different looks and feels...and I also understand was is available to be in post.

Talking about post...the filters can be found at:

Pretty cheap filters and they do a good job in converting non 24P into 24P.

take care

Nice stuff super8. Yeah I really miss those 80's, they beat the pd150 for me on LCD size, lens quality, and audio quality, hands down.
