AG-DVC80, PDX10, or VX2100???

Re: AG-DVC80, PDX10, or VX2100???

Well put Barry...
I can only look at this concept in the way my work has changed. My first real job was editing 35mm film work prints on a Flatbed Steenbeck, then to a linear video editing system, then to a analog tapebased non-linear editing system, then to digital non-linear editing and compositing systems.

It has been quite a journey, and there are many times that I miss the flatbed, when you have time to really absorb and respect the implications of the edit...
In a non-linear world you can and do lose the reflection and repercusions of the edit, and so lose the subjectivity of the edit.
Thereby what is the difference of edited version 1 versus edited version 100....is it better or worse?
Pretty hard to tell when you are a billion miles away from what the intent of the original Script or Storyboard was....
ok I'll shut up now.

Re: AG-DVC80, PDX10, or VX2100???

Taylor, that's exactly what I'm talking about.

Spielberg declared that he would NEVER edit on computer, he would edit on film until the day he dies, because he demands that he see his work on the big screen, in all its glory, to put it into context.

Noble attitude, I think. Also, extremely in the minority. But you're exactly right, when you're slicing a workprint you really have to think through what you're doing, vs. the instant-feedback on/off of NLE. Which is better? Obviously there's something to be said for the flexibility provided by the NLE, and the "undo" button! But does that make the end product "better"? I don't know, I think that's up to each artist.

My first 35mm camera was an Eyemo (wind-up, spring-wound, no reflex viewing, just the most primitive camera you can imagine). Took 100' loads, which meant you had an absolute maximum of 66 seconds of runtime before you had to stop and change loads. And the spring-wound motor meant you could only ever run a take for a maximum of 25 seconds, at which point the spring would run down & die. And every 1-minute load cost about $65 (stock plus developing). That's $1 per second. Let me tell you, man, that teaches you to think before you shoot! Makes the 2.5-minute loads in Super8 seem like an eternity!

So I do a lot of commercials. 30-second stories. And they're highly structured. And they're conceived and executed and shot like "movies." But, on the flip side, my work looks nothing like "The Wonderkid", Matt, and his "Uninvited" video... because he's so immersed in digital/NLE, he's developed a style that I'm quite jealous of. He can do a lot of things I can't.

So I'm not saying one tool is intrinsically better than another, but that the tool will definitely influence every aspect of the art you're trying to create. And, sometimes certain tools are more appropriate than others, of course.

Re: AG-DVC80, PDX10, or VX2100???

Then again, the people who matter will know it doesn't matter

Oh, I know you were mostly joking, but that's the underpinning of an elitist attitude that *really* grates me.

"What does he know?" (*snort*) "He's a moron."

Unforunately, any "in" crowd tends to develop that to some degree or another. Me? My fields are law, politics, and theatre. It's damn near unbearable in all of them . . . :-/ :-/ :-/

Anyway, end of rant. I know you didn't mean anything by it, Mike -- mostly. But it's the part of you that DID which I'm hoping to curb, while you're still young. ;) ;)

Anyway, I agree with Barry -- it DOES matter. I was on the cusp of sophisticated software and just plain ol' typing when in law school, and I can tell you, what I wrote by hand is far different in style than what I write on the computer screen. It's a whole different dynamic.

Re: AG-DVC80, PDX10, or VX2100???

Hahaha, Jubal28, I really *did* mean nothing by it. Nothing negative towards anybody, at least.

I just meant to say that if you're watching something that was shot on VHS, but it was lit well, composed well, had solid acting, and pushed the medium to its extreme, you'd be more impressed than seeing something that sucks, but was shot on 35mm.

Hahhaa, I didn't mean to sound like an elitist! Don't think of me that way! Please!

(Then again, what do you all know? LOL ;))
