After Life, a super successful series, apparently 3 seasons and counting, the Ricky Gervais vehicle.
Extremely high rating on IMDB 8.4 at the moment, and general hit. I finally got around to watching it.
I lasted 2 episodes. Sorry, I don’t see what the fuss is about. I guess I’ll chaulk it up to another instance where my taste doesn’t seem to jibe with the majority, but in keeping with my pledge not to waste time on stuff I don’t enjoy, I’m not waiting around to see more, I’m bailing. Based on what I’ve seen I don’t see it getting better.
It’s a paradox of sorts. I’m a big Ricky Gervais fan, love his standups, The Office of course, and generally every time I’ve seen him, he’s off the charts good, one of the very top guys (Louis CK, Chapelle, Chris Rock, a handful of others). But his TV work (other than The Office, of course), I just can’t get into. “Derek” had potential, but blew it by dropping comedy in favor of mawkish feel-good BS that just didn’t work at all IMHO.
Now this super weak sh|t. The premise is thin, maybe single skit’s worth of an idea, stretched into multiple episodes, WTF. The worst is that there’s very little humor. Shock humor is a tricky thing, and it’s inapt in this scenario. Long setups and very obvious ones at that, and super shallow “jokes”. Worst of all - not funny. In those two episodes I watched there’s literally one semi-laugh, and that’s about it. Also again, it seems a Gervais weakness, it’s trending toward the mawkish, which is abhorrent to me in general, but especially in a comedy.
But I can’t deny that it’s wildly sucessful, so what do I know. Not my cup of tea at all. Happy to hear from fans, because that’s alwasy interesting. YMMV, obviously.
