After Effects flicker on still images problem

Hi, I need help. I’m currently doing a project for someone. I’m using After Effects 6.5. The project involves about 40 high quality JPG photo’s panning across the screen right to left one by one at a very slow speed, I keyframed the motion and exported.

My problem is that I get a slight flicker on the pictures after I export, it’s not extreme or anything but I believe their could easily be room for improvement. Images with strong edges and colors flicker the most.

I tried dienterlacing, I tried the “Reduce Interlace Noise Flicker” option, but I still get the slight flickering, is it caused because the still images are slowly moving? is their anything to take out the flicker and make it smoother?

Thanks in advance.

If they are moving slowly enough, you are seeing them jump because they are covering less than one pixle's width of movement per frame. That's pretty normal. Just enable Motion blur in the Layer being moved and enable Motion blur preview. That should fix some of it, if not all. Sometimes, the picture is moving too slowly for motion blur to work, so try enabling frame blending, and enabling the frame blending preview. Then do a Ram preview, and see. Either of them, or both at the same time should help.

Good luck

Thanks for the help, when i render my file out with fields the pictures have major jagged steps on the sides of the pictures, not preatty looking.

Another problem i encountered is when i compress the video in Quicktime with Sorcen Squeeze, or most codecs for that matter i get this transparant horizontal distortion line that comes from the bottom of the screen and goes up, it keeps repeating over and over as you watch the video, any idea why this is happening?

Are you watching it on an ntsc monitor or just your computer screen?

It looks the same on a LCD screen and NTSC monitor, it’s like the interlacing pattern is hard pressed on the pictures if I export with fields from the render que.

It’s also strange because when I export with fields from the render Que it turns out this way, but when I go export movie from the file menu and choose uncompressed or whatever it doesn’t matter if I export it interlaced or progressive, it ends up looking the same but without the noticeable interlaced lines hard pressed on the pictures.

Using Reduce Interlace Flicker at a setting of 0,8 will smooth 1px lines and remove the flicker. If this doesn't solve your problem then there is something else going on. Are you sure your composition has the correct frame rate? In Project Setting is the frame rate you want?

The checkbox is definitely set to best, anyhow I think I figured out my problem, the pictures were originally way better quality then 72dpi, so I scaled down the pictures in Photoshop to 72dpi.

Now in AE it looks a hell of allot better and with the Reduce Interlace Flicker it’s much better then before.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Cheers

Yes, unless you are zooming in on the image, save it out from PS as the biggest size it will need to be, and no more. It will speed AE up and tend to smooth out the flicker...also as mentioned, be sure to use motion blur.

Depending on the content of the images a reduction of the saturation and luma values will help smooth things out for NTSC and compression.
