After 4K- then what?

Something thats been on my mind a lot lately as it seems every new day there is yet another NEW camera announcement.

How will the major players (Sony, Canon, Panasonic, RED, etc) differentiate themselves when affordable(4K for under 4K or maybe I'm dreaming??) cameras become common place?

It's a business after all and if Apple never came out with the iPhone they would most likely no longer be in business.

NHK is already pushing 8k with measurable benefits. So that'll be an easy transition -- the vendors will push 4k for a few years and then start pushing 8k.

Personally I don't even see the benefit of 4k unless you are making an effects heavy film. We sure aren't about to start building bigger screens, because that wouldn't be economically efficient, and frankly 4k on a screen right now is just overkill. 4k is an actors worst nightmare. Too many pores!

Is there something i'm missing? Are there any actual cinematography benefits to 4k and beyond?

Does anybody see any advantage of anything over 8k?

I think they will have a hard enough time to simply push 4k out of the door! There's absolutely nothing to gain after 8K, and that will be good, when we don't need to give a f*** about resolution anymore, of course 8k is really useless when 4k is the standard :)

I would say in the documentary area, especially right now with content being viewed at 1080p, 4k has large benefits for fast action sequences where physically panning can cause issues with rolling shutter if you pan too fast, 4k gives you the ability to "pan & scan", and thus physically pan slower. It also gives you the ability to crop-zoom, usually both during (1DCs Super35mm mode) and post production.

That said, 4k recorded and displayed as 4k, for nature scenes, is amazing, especially on a large screen, and the high detail makes story telling have a larger impact.

I can't say much about fictional side of things though, 4k might be the end of the line for a while, and they might start pushing into other territories.

Well.. don't see the rolling shutter issue being that important after 2013. Sony started it... someone will come next soon, and then weeee no more rolling shutter :)

As we have all seen with retina displays, cramming resolution into small sizes will only become more standart, it will also go futher. This is only natural in progress.......
My grandparents had old tube tvs back then, then my parents had a semi cool color tv, now my parents have 42" HD tvs, 4K is knocking on the door and guess what.... when my kids leave home they will probably buy a 4K tv as their first tv. Wait, I retract that, they will probably buy an 8K tv and then the market will begin to offer something bigger. Unless it gets replaced by something completely new and different. How long could we be away from usable 3D holograms? (that wasn't a rethorical joke question......)

Fact of the matter remains, everything evolves and will continue to do so. But having said that, I can't imagine either going past 8K, but I know we will. Question is how fast?

I'm getting tired of always hearing "The business don't need and wont change...." - who the hell cares?! Really... There are so many of us that if you guys wont conform and adjust, then the next litter will, and they will do so at half the price of you. If the broadcast companies wont change, then some new companies will arise and take over where the current ones have failed. Maybe someone should look at the unreasonable high salaries of tv people, and maybe invest that money in progress instead.

Its one giant scam.

8K screen will render todays HD footage obscure, it will be worse than the 240p YouTube footage today. Literally. My guess is, players like LG and Samsung just want their customers to have a better viewing pleasure, thats all they want.

So what better way to pursue excellence than to 4xupscale the resolution of TV. Some haters might say "I guess we wont have to go to the movies anymore". No, because they'll also come up with 32K iMegaMax HD 5D cinemas where all your superhero movies will be screened (not your regular superhero movies though, these superheros will have flaws and weaknesses, boy oh boy, just like us).

Im all for progress, but this is evident money move, like most of things, it will be nothing significant to the table yet it will be inevitable for you to get it. How much room for upscale there is? Will we get to a point where you'll need a separate house to enclose the super MegaHD Amazator screen? I dont see inovation or progress.

Things like computer processors should be faster and faster, computers are tools, and the faster the brains of the tools are - the better. Bigger TV screen is just bigger TV screen. But hey, at least there'll be a lot of remakes due to the new resolutions. Star Wars 2K20 UHD Experience - go watch the rebirth of the legendary franchise - on the BIGGEST screen ever.

I hope they get to produce 128K screens that tip over due to their weight and fall all over peoples heads. Now that will be a huge progress for the humanity.
