AFS + MF mode on GH2 in 24P mode?

I have read the manual cover to cover, played with every setting and I am pretty sure there is no way to do the following:

Begin recording in 24P (press shutter half way and auto focus, press and start recording) then use the focus ring for manual focusing (but still press the shutter half way while filming to focus again)?

Kinda of APS + MF mode?

Hate to answer my own post but .... it seems all you have to do is press the shutter halfway down and HOLD anytime during a shot and you can then pull focus with the focus ring.

When in video modes AFC and AFS do exactly the same thing.

Panasonic really should have made it when in AFC, it does AFC rather having to set it on in the video menu.

And when in AFS mode, you should be able to control manual focus at ALL TIMES WITHOUT NEEDING THE SHUTTER HALFPRESSED then when you did half press the shutter or hit the touch screen it would autofocus.

This is true before you start filming but mid shot you have to press the shutter to get the focus ring to work when in APS mode.

As far as I have been able to do at least ...

Re-read my post, I'm saying Panasonic shouldn't have made the shutter halfpress a requirement for manual focus, while in an autofocus mode, a matter a fact there is no reason to disable AF at all even in MF mode

It's a fly by wire manual focus anyway, so there would be no negatives in doing this

Gotcha, it was a 'SHOULD be' not 'you can' ...

There might be some technical complication. M43 uses two ways communication between lens and body. Enabling both MF and AF at the same time might be a problem.

AFS should do AF only when it's half pressed. Fully pressed, it should start recording. AF should be disabled, and the MF should be enabled. Next time shutter button is half pressed again, AF again while MF is diabled.

For me focus for this gh2 so confuse! Menu have many setting for focus and also different setting on dials on body for focus. And shutter but you push halfway? Other time it focus on it own even if you won't touch. And manual make me crazy because my english bad and I have little desexia so I hope berry makes training video. I buy it.

ghosttv, your camera might have "continuous AF" switched on.

Press your "Menu/set" button on the back of your camera

Go down into the "MOTION PICTURE" submenu, it is the picture of the video camera second icon from the top on the left

Press right to page 2 and it's at the top

Don't worry about your English and Dyslexia, this camera has so many controls and options it is hard for most of us to understand. Actually a video tutorial would be a great idea, I think a lot of products would benefit from them nowadays. If for example the AF was in action the camera could either choose to ignore the input from the focus ring or prematurely stop the AF action and switch to MF.

I highly doubt that, judging that you effectively do have MF and AF at the same time when you halfpress the shutter. What difference would there be if you weren't touching the focus ring and you were to halfpress the shutter for AF?? It would only be a difference in the software that is all and something Panasonic could easily implement if they wanted to.

By fly by wire I mean the focus ring isn't physically moving the lens at all, meaning it is done all electronically, much like some pedals in cars nowdays

I forgot about turning off the option off. Thanks.

Yeap. If continuous AF is disabled, intuitively it should be possible to have AFS + MF without holding the shutter. First of all why is AFS working like AFC? That's really annoying and complicating this issue. Hopefully Panasonic fixes this.

They should get rid of "Continuous AF" option from the menu. It should be always enabled on AFC mode and always disabled on AFS mode.

Then half shutter press should trigger AF. Full shutter press should begin recording. Release shutter. No continuous AF while recording. Simply turning the focus ring should enable MF. Half shutter press should AF again. Full shutter press should stop recording. Gawd... this will be so nice for m43 and 43 lenses. Basically this is like assisted AF as needed.

For AFC mode, holding shutter to enable MF makes sense.

I think you explained it better than I did, glad to see we're on the same page :)

I hope Panasonic representative reads this thread and report to his boss. Then long chain of command...

Can we have Panasonic S.O.S sticky thread so that they can gather current issues quickly?

Just got a GH2 and found this thread. I couldn't agree more -- the focus options and controls are confusing, and the manual doesn't help much. Panasonic needs to hire usability engineers.

Just got my GH2 (I'm a Canon 60D user also) and I'm using it with the f1.7 pancake.
I can't believe how poorly the autofocus selections are designed! I'm happy I found this thread. Any updates on this? Any firmware fixes on the issue? When you set CONTINUOUS AF to "on" in the menu, AFC and AFS do the same thing-- just auto focus away. And when you turn it to off neither of them autofocus. How is this possible? It seems like a no brainer. Why can't you select it just on the dial! Why even have a dial that has AFC and AFS?

My other question... is there ANY way to digitally zoom in to focus while recording like the MF assist? Sometimes with shallow DOF an interviewee will move a bit and I want to check focus close up without stopping or changing anything.

I'm not too happy with the camera so far. It is an ok toy. This pancake lens is impossible for real shoots- fly by wire is no good- and you have to turn the focus SOOOO much to go from close to infinity that you end up twisting all around the camera or getting your fingers in the frame.

Pancake 1.7 is too noisy for video with AF; must use MF with that lens, and then you'd be better off with a legacy lens for video. The GH2 needs a fast AF quiet lens for video. I guess there are two lenses coming this summer? Al

I'm not really an AF guy anyway- I'm just trying to figure out all this camera has to offer and got surprised. Virtually all my used sound from a mic off the camera, so the sound of the AF isn't really the issue. I plan to get a voigtlander when they are in better supply anyway. The 1.7 is more a lens I intend to use for just walking around with friends because it is so small.
