Affordable DVCPro HD Down-conversion

evin, i'm shooting a feature in september on the HVX and am considering sending you copies of everything to back up to LTO2. let me know when you nail down a price so i can see how it fits into the budget.

Sorry, haven't looked up here in a while. The LTO hasn't made it here yet, I've got to save for Red. But I'll let you know when I have it.

I have a Blackmagic Decklink pro card in a 2.7Gh Dual G5. This plus an AES Digital to analog converter for audio allows me to send out downconverted SD video in realtime from an HD timeline in FCP, as well as have realtime TC burns.

This is nice for preview quality but not to create SD masters. The BMD down conversion is very crisp, no antialiasing ... realtime down converters that can keep up with good software conversions (the freeware MPEG Streamclip does one of the best, btw) are still very expensive. On of the best realtime converters is integrated in Panasonics HD-D5 deck ...

I shoot HD 24 pn. Then edit it in HD timeline. When i'm finished editing, I copy it all to DV50 23.98 timeline and do the color correction Then I can see it on my monitor. Print to tape, ready
Isn't this a good method?

I haven't done any HD editing yet. Why do you color correct in the DV
50 timeline and not first in the HD timeline? Thanks.

hey guys quick question. i am going to start shooting a documentary with the HVX and I wanted to know your recommendations on what format I should shoot in. I have the HVX the firestore 100 and the mac pro desktop with fcp studio. I want to shoot in dvcpro hd as 24p quicktimes and just edit at home and finish but i do not want to shoot in a format that will require extra hardware. Do i really need to buy an HD capture card at this point???

No.

Record directly to the FS-100, hook it up to your Mac, copy the QuickTime files to your Mac, and edit. You don't need anything else.

dolph2000 gave you the answer - "Then I can see it on my monitor"
You need to output to a pro monitor to do CC with any accuracy.

Yes, I did miss that but now I'm wondering, as I get closer to
editing, does this mean that I can't or shouldn't, rely on
the viewer window in Final Cut Pro 5.12 for assessing color
correction?

Also, after color correcting in DVCPRO 50, do you dolph2000
output from there or go back up to HD first?

Also, if an external monitor is available that's HD, such as
the Apple Cinema display, would that be accepable for
viewing color corrections?

Thanks!

I just stay in my HD timeline, firewire out to my HVX, then S-video out to my monitor. Works like a charm. A lot of people don't realize you can do that. :D
