AF101E Video Noise on Black parts of the image - looks like snow

this looks like gain noise to me, last camcorder I had, Sony fx1000, I had to go to -6db of gain to get rid of it. XHA1 you have to go negative to get rid of it. Have you tried video mode -6db of gain?

I love these nice fast FTP's you guys have! Stephen and Petros- who are your hosts? 500mb/s up is very comfy for these big files =)

Yes, as far as i know. 0db has the most dynamic range and is the ideal base for exposure. - or + gain reduce dynamic range (as I understand it). 0db on this camera is ISO 400.

For me, using negative gain is only for trying to get an extra stop of open iris outdoors if you can't get any more ND in quickly.

Does it matter which folder I place it in? It shows as having 3 files that pull into FCP (I only put in one file to try), but when I try to log them, FCP crashes.

Yeah, sorry about that. The files should be placed in the "STREAM" folder, located in the "BMDV" folder, I believe.

Eleven2.com - and that one's just the shared host... we also have a dedicated server on a 100mbit/s uplink... but we need that for other purposes. ;)

Thanks for posting the test, there does seem to my eye to be dancing "noise" in the shadows, while lower ISO does look better it is still there. This is not what I expected to see coming out of the AF100, I hope Panasonic has a firmware fix soon.

Discouraging news, while I'm waiting for mine to arrive. Taking some wind out of my sail so to speak.

Seems as though the GH2 has some similar problems. I decided to peek over on the DSLR thread to see some of the same gripes. It's strange though, that Barry could shoot a short film and everyone on the team were raving about it, and now that it's in the hands of the buyers, things are getting messy. User error, or maybe everyone is just starting to get used to the settings and using the camera? I hope that's the case!

Well, I was the one who wrote, directed, and handled the post on that short film, and I can't say I ever saw noise (as it seems to be described here) in any but two shots in the entire film. And those were two shots were I wasn't surprised to see it, due to the nature of the shot/exposure. So I have complete confidence that when my AF-100 arrives on Wednesday, that I'll be able to get the image I want out of it.

And if there is something amiss (and I very much doubt there will be, but hey, it can happen), I know for a fact that Panasonic will make it right.

No fear, uncertainty or doubt here.

The noise I'm seeing @ 800 iso, clip19 for example, is really good imho. I just wish there was a really clean profile at 0 iso.

(viewed through windows media player and sony vegas.)
